israel just committed a crime in European waters. It defies all morality—and respect for international law—that just days from now, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) will welcome the perpetrator to whitewash its crimes before 50% of the European population.
Governments have a duty to protect their citizens. Inarguably, governments also have a collective obligation under international law to do everything in their power to protect people everywhere, and anywhere, from genocide.
This includes isolating perpetrators of war crimes at the cultural level and refusing participation in propagandistic efforts to scrub the face of genocide clean. Russia was banned from Eurovision over its invasion of Ukraine—a crime exceeded by the pariah state of israel many times over in scope, and in cruelty. The lack of moral consistency is glaring.
Fans, participants and broadcasters have a duty to act.
