Advertisers need eyeballs, platforms need a constant churn of new stuff, and creators are pushed to make a lot of content all the time that is just barely good enough. Subscriptions are a huge mental transaction cost for people, and they don't incentivise individual quality goods either. They are just a subsidy that people don't ever feel good about engaging with.
