After ten days of a tricky forecast, the waiting ended and the show finally began. By first light, 100 surfers filled the lineup at Pipeline and Backdoor. At 7:59 a.m., the crowd cleared as the first of seven teams paddled out.
This marked the 30th edition of the Shootout, and while past events have leaned heavily toward Pipeline, today told a different story. All of the meaningful scores came through Backdoor, with the right-hander delivering two clear standout heats from Da Boyz and Team Peru. Wave of the Day went to @kalanoweo , who disappeared deep and emerged all the way through to Off the Wall.
With an extension to the forecast window granted by the Mayor’s office and one round now in the books, the Shootout is setting up for a powerful conclusion.
The next two days are expected to be XXL and strong onshore winds.
Conditions look better over the weekend, but far from perfect. Pipeline picks the winner and whoever finds the diamonds in the rough will be $50,000 richer.
