I was born in Indiana and lived there off and on until I was 10 years old. In elementary school they told us “Hoosier” was a mispronunciation from pioneer days of the words “who’s ear” or possibly “ who’s here.” I don’t think the teachers actually knew the origin of the word Hoosier so they just made something up.
