She's still a bit anxious about how to do this mothering thing. But she's taking care of them. In 48 hours she'll be calm and content.

For those asking, I'm sorry, but none of these 3 pups are for sale. They are private stock only for now. The intent is to train them up and see how they do as Legionarius dogs. Future litters will have pups open to the public. However, these first litters will require significant testing to ensure standards.

Five total, but two did not survive. So three pups it is! She pulled that trashbag into the whelping box and won't let me take it out. It's her first time as a mother and she's a little frantic figuring out what to do. So far so good, though. View quoted note →

While she waits for the next round of contractions, she's cleaning her teets and stimulating the milk supply so it's ready for the pups when they're born. It always amazes me how they just instinctively know what to do. This is one of the important traits we select for. If she turns out to be a bad momma and can't care properly for her pups, she'll be out of the Legionarius program. The genes must be protected rigorously if we want to maintain those good instincts. Just added the puppy rails to prevent accudental suffocations. That hanging PVC will allow puppies to slide underneath if momma accidentally lies down against them and the wall. The walls of the whelping box are just plastic "garden bed walls". This setup will work for momma and pups for the first 3-4 weeks. View quoted note →
