So many people are terrorised by the prospect of an alternative path less travelled. The way we have institutionalised almost every aspect of life leads most people to feel scared and afraid of anyone forging their own pathways through this life. Acceptable patterns of behaviour are psychologically engrained into the populace from a very young age. There is something in the DNA of every person who has found a way to peer beyond the curtain and reject the societal framing. Those are the special ones. Snowden and Assange being prime examples.
