I have no opinion on Highguard and it shutting down. The game wasn't for me and I was never going to play it, stellar or not. As a games journalism observer though, it is a curiosity... image ...

I've seen this article from October doing the rounds again. Some thoughts: Mat Piscstella clarified that the question that was asked was: "How often do you typically purchase a new game?" New in this case meant actually new, not new-to-you but really used, actually new. I fall into the group that rarely buys new games. Almost everything I buy is used, most of it is retro. Most new games aren't worth the $70 or $80 dollars they are asking - bloated, preachy, unfinished - most are slop, designed by committee. Do we really need another open world game? Are any actually replayable? In 2026, who doesn't have a massive backlog already, and why are so many games being released? Every new game is competing for your time with every game that's ever been released. A huge chunk of games today are released on discs without the full game build. Like a digital release, thats just a license, it can be taken from you at any time. I buy physical games. If I'm buying a game digitally, it needs to be so cheap its basically a throwaway purchase (like most of my library on Steam). To sum it up, I'm not shocked by these numbers. image
