Halfway through this fascinating episode of @Trust Revolution
Why do we so eagerly allow ourselves to be trapped on the hamster wheel?
I postulate the hamster wheel is an integral part of a tool for decentralized social consensus.
Imagine that the hamster wheel makes sounds — notes and frequencies which are, in general, irritating.
The notes and frequencies are adjustable and over time we become accustomed to whatever sounds we listen to for long enough. They go from irritating to musical.
Anyone whose hamster wheel sounds like music is part of our tribe. Anyone whose hamster wheel is irritating is not part of our tribe.
The thing is that this system actually works well as a mechanism of decentralized consensus — assume only that the rules, values and expectations of society are baked into the sounds of the hamster wheel.
The point is that if you tell someone to hop off the hamster wheel, that might not necessarily be good advice. We must first understand why this system is necessarily designed the way it is.
I recently reread 1984, and a similar question arises: why do humans so eagerly embrace doublethink? I could reword my above postulate to state that we have evolved doublethink as a method of decentralized social consensus. Doublethink entails the internalization of delusions and hypocrisies, which are the grating sounds in my hamster wheel analogy above.
Ok, time for me to finish the pod!

Nice discussion of nostr, AI, and Shakespeare with @Alex Gleason

absolutely. Nostr is the best protocol and has the best community in the world to tackle the problem of WoT, which in my opinion is the most important as-yet-unsolved problem in all of freedom tech
