🎧 Latest pod is out. I talk with Sovereign Origin ( @Sovereign Origin 🥕 ) about his concept FITS (Financially Independent, Time Sovereign) a new alternative to the traditional FIRE movement (Financially Independent, Retire Early). While both approaches aim to escape the “rat race,” FITS redefines the pursuit of financial independence through the lens of Bitcoin, focusing on sovereignty over one’s time with a unique perspective towards wealth, work, and life. We had a great talk about the FITS concept, exploring some of the technical aspects, as well as some of the challenges inherent in the traditional FIRE approach which is built on the premise of the ongoing growth of the stock market and ultimately is not truely independent because the state can always come and turn off or confiscate your retirement fund – Something they can’t do with Bitcoin.
🎧 Latest pod is out. James Pierog is co-founder and CEO of Bitcoin Prediction Market, a new company back by Bitcoin startup accelerator Wolf, enabling bets on real-world events using the Bitcoin Lightning Network. We explore what a prediction market is, why Bitcoin is the perfect medium for this, and what new forms of crowd intelligence through prediction markets could mean in an increasingly complex world. Along the way we discuss the intersection of philosophy and mathematics, the wisdom of the crowd, AI, and the challenge of dealing with rapid change.
🌊⛏️ I had the awesome chance to visit a 50KW Bitcoin mining site in Gunma, Japan, operated by Agile Energy X, a subsidiary of TEPCO Power Grid. Big thanks to the team at @OCEAN who I tagged along with! The site is operated by TEPCO Renewable & Power utilising 50KW of solar that would otherwise be wasted as the site is currently awaiting grid upgrade and connection. I think this is a big step forward for broader engagement with power generators about how Bitcoin can help the grid and for understanding the opportunity to participate in this new monetary network. There is a lot that we can learn from the power of Bitcoin mining to act as both a load balancing and grid stabilisation tool, as well as helping with the ROI and financial planning of new generation assets.
🎧 What could Bitcoin mean for New Zealand at a national level? Samson Mow is the former Chief Strategy Officer at Blockstream and current CEO at JAN3, focussed on Nation-state Bitcoin adoption as well as developing the Aqua Bitcoin wallet. Samson is well known for advising various governments and heads of state about Bitcoin adoption, including in El Salvador with their plan to issue Bitcoin Bonds. We discuss the game theory and approaches to nation-state Bitcoin Adoption, including the Bitcoin mining and energy story and how smaller countries like New Zealand can approach Bitcoin at both a grass-roots and state level.
🎧 Latest pod is out. Andrew M. Bailey @Andrew M. Bailey is a Professor and co-author of Resistance Money: A Philosophical case for Bitcoin. We discuss the book’s approach to communicating the idea of Bitcoin from a global perspective, providing strong arguments for Bitcoin’s value as a net good for the world. We also talk about the history of political philosophy and how ideas spread as well as the new interdisciplinary Bitcoin Research Institute at the University of Wyoming where Andrew will be taking on a role as Professor of Philosophy.
I am reading The Sovereign Individual again. Has anyone else been reading it? Some truth bombs that stand out: 1. Is anarchy the world order already? There is no global power, only competing states and interests and the logic of violence. 2. Politics is downstream of technology, mass democracy is a product of mass production, along with mass media 3. Voting is a proxy for military violence 4. What is it that makes people believe in the legitimacy of democratic institutions? No other organisation or business is run this way, when you understand the logic of violence in the industrial age it becomes clear.
🎧 Latest episode is out. Don Brash was the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand from 1988 until 2002. Don was also a Member of Parliament, and leader of the New Zealand National Party. We discuss Don’s work at the Reserve Bank, which came at a pivotal time alongside the economic reforms of the late 80s. Don shares the history of the famous 0 - 2% inflation target that he helped implement, and we talk more broadly about the state’s understanding of inflation, its causes, Bitcoin, and the role of Central Banking. We go on to talk about Don’s current focus looking at both the geopolitical situation New Zealand faces in-between the US and China, as well as his work with Hobson’s pledge looking at democracy issues closer to home.
🎧 Latest pod: Max Hillebrand ( @Max ) is a Bitcoin builder, educator, and privacy advocate. Max has contributed to open-source Bitcoin projects including BISQ, JoinMarket, and Wasabi Wallet, while also talking about individual freedom and self-sovereignty. We dive straight into the concept of The Second Realm, which is focussed on building parallel economic systems in which sovereign individuals are empowered to pursue life, liberty and happiness without the harassment of the State. Along the way we discuss anarchy, agorism, praxeology, and natural law. Max is a wealth of knowledge and I enjoyed this conversation with him, I hope you do too.
I am looking forward to Saturday. See you all at Bitkiwi in Christchurch. The event runs 1 - 5pm & the talk panel is at 1:30pm. Learn about Bitcoin, buy a beer with sats, or just have a yarn. Free and open to all.
🎧 I speak with Ian from the Victorian Bitcoin Technology Club @Victorian Bitcoin Technology Club, a not-for-profit incorporated club supporting Bitcoin education and grassroots bitcoin adoption in the state of Victoria, Australia. We discuss the background to starting the club, how it acts as a backwards-compatible organisation for interfacing with the legacy world while also embracing Bitcoin principles. We also talk about the club’s mission, their plans for the future, and how they are trying to operate on a Bitcoin standard.
Quick sketch from Prague day 1. This city is incredible.
It seems we went from "new innovations in digital money are being tentatively explored by a small team..." to "TIME TO GET READY FOR THE CBDC NEW ZEALAND: ITS COMING" in a period of about 6 months. It's not looking good for privacy and human rights. Interestingly it looks like they already have an internal project titled "Digital Cash Campaign" designed to push this narrative out there: image I have heard that the RBNZ's unelected oafdom are also beginning the rounds in the local media to plant the seeds for their new magic money.
I'm making an effort to use nostr more. It is a much better way to communicate.
🎧 The Economic Violence of the New Zealand State and the RBNZ with Ben Jarvie Ben Jarvie is a writer and kiwi Bitcoiner working for Amber App, a Bitcoin-only exchange. We talk about Ben’s recent travels to El Salvador and Madeira, and we reflect on the declining situation of my beloved home country, New Zealand, and in particular the economic violence that the State and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand continues to unleash upon the people through its egregious manipulation of the money. But that said, we know that Bitcoin fixes this, and we are here to build bridges and meet people where they are at! CC @npub1fvzm...r9hy @AmberApp @maddnz @TIP_NZ
