Steely Dan, my favourite band of all time. One of my favourite songs of all time is “My Old School”.
I remember the thirty-five sweet goodbyes
When you put me on the Wolverine up to Annandale
It was still September
When your daddy was quite surprised
To find you with the working girls in the county jail
I was smoking with the boys upstairs when I
Heard about the whole affair, I said oh no
William and Mary won't do
Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I'm never going back
To my old school
Oleanders growing outside her door
Soon they're gonna be in bloom up in Annandale
I can't stand her
Doing what she did before
Living like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale
Well, I hear the whistle but I can't go, I'm gonna
Take her down to Mexico, she said oh no
Guadalajara won't do
Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I'm never going back
To my old school
California tumbles into the sea
That'll be the day I go back to Annandale
Tried to warn you
About Chino and Daddy Gee
But I can't seem to get to you through the U.S. Mail
Well I hear the whistle but I can't go, I'm gonna
Take her down to Mexico, she said oh no
Guadalajara won't do
Well, I did not think the girl
Could be so cruel
And I'm never going back
To my old school
The main reception areas look so impressive in this hotel. Especially the second photo and to be honest the image doesn’t really do it much justice. It’s a ceiling as high as some cathedrals I’ve seen in the past.

It dawned on me that I hadn’t shared any photos of my food here in Mexico yet. Well for you sweet toothed #nostriches out there, feast your eyes on this little medley of desserts. Yummy.

A little while back I announced that I was embarking on a photography project and to use Nostr as my publishing tool. The focus of one of my projects being the bridges of the Thames. I will return to it soon.
Thing is my head is full of ideas for content on this protocol and I might as well just go for it, to join the growing community of photographers on Nostr and to promote them broadly. So please follow, as I’m sharing profiles galore.
Since we’re in Mexico at the moment, we’ve done a little exploration and visited Tulum a few days ago. I’ve got some nice photos but since I’m not travelling with my full kit and time is always limited at such places, I feel the photos are a little bit “snapshot”.
I think this is why it’s good to get to know your own local patch and hone your craft there sometimes. I feel a greater affinity with that.
Incredible country though is Mexico and the Mayan ruins are incredible.

Possibly my new profile photo.

Good afternoon everyone. Even when overcast here, it’s still lovely. Just people watching from the comfort of my sun lounger. Maybe will give the hammock another go later?

Taking some night shots this evening on my iPhone whilst walking along the beach. I absolutely love the effect and the clouds genuinely looked like this. We reckon the moonlight was the cause of it.

The rain storm last night was phenomenal. Well we are in the tropics of course and now as dry as a bone. Like it never happened.

#asknostr Nostr seems to handle a lack of access pretty well, for example using Nostur, it buffered a post I wrote when I had no signal and sent it later. Is this by design? It’s good, especially in parts of the world where service might be limited or at best occasionally interrupted.
Wow the rain is impressive tonight in our jungle hotel. It’s louder than British rain!
Mayan calendars as seen at Tulum, Mexico today and other tourist shop ephemeral things. I’m downloading photos and video of our trip, will share later.

Hola and GM from a windy Mexico this morning. Well at least it is in Quintana Roos.
Being in a different time zone appears to affect engagement? The people who might normally respond aren’t seeing my notes or they get lost in the feed?
One of the startling things has been the proliferation of soldiers on the streets of Playa del Carmen but I totally get it. There is trouble in Paradise. Often the way. The link between beautiful parts of the world and drug cartels, seems to exist in so many places; especially this part of America. This is why people encourage the use of official taxis and tour guides; not just to make extra money but your corpse on the beach, is not what their government needs; bad for tourism.
I did feel a little ill at ease yesterday when approached by people along Avenida Quinta. Were they genuinely trying to interest us in their hand-crafted souvenirs or was it the front for something darker? More sinister? The guys dressed as superheroes, what the fuck were they up to? Fun bar promoters or worse?
Maybe I’m overthinking but sometimes it’s better to be brutally obtuse than too game for it; something more than you might have bargained for.
This article made for harrowing reading and I wouldn’t want to share it with my mum or she’d fly out and rescue my wife, myself and our two friends. She doesn’t own a plane but would commandeer one if given half the chance.
Apart from that, the people are all lovely and I want to explore Mexico more, it’s raw, real and its beauty more than skin deep. If only the military could just burn the cocaine plantations in the Americas.

Absolutely - my friends kids terrify me sometimes but it’s not their fault, they have so much rammed down into their heads. Even if parents discourage it they persist.
Our own children and my 3 grandchildren differ though because of my wife and I being detached from celebrity culture. View quoted note →
Senor Frogs in Playa del Carmen is fun and we got to keep our glasses. They also have a clothes store in the town and you can find out more about them through their website
The food and drink was great and I’m sure we’ll go back soon whilst we are staying in the area.
