#TBT: When first reef was maxing out, and @bethanyhamilton was swinging on everything. Here’s the forecast for tomorrow’s @dahuiofficial Backdoor Shootout. A long-period NW swell builds through the morning and peaks in the afternoon. As it fills in, some reefs will become overloaded (though it’s not quite large enough to qualify as a true outer-reef/Waimea swell). Widespread surf in the 2–3x overhead range prevails at the peak, with standout spots pushing 20-foot faces. A light wind pattern remains in place, with land and sea breezes likely. “After six years of traveling the world documenting a handful of my closest friends, I’m stoked to finally have a trailer. “It’s hard to sum up what this film means to me in an Instagram caption. This project took everything, time, energy, patience and a lot of emotion. It’s a true labor of love: fully independent, grassroots, built with plenty of blood, sweat, and tears. The Shootout’s longboard division is a window into the earliest days of Pipe in the 1960s, when surfers took on this reef with heavy single fins. The modern shortboards we ride today trace back to the “Pipeliners,” as shapers in the ’70s began refining boards to match the steep curves of the Banzai. The @dahuiofficial is ON. Live now. 🔗 in bio. @huioheenalunorthshore 🌊 Forecast update: Really pulsey swell on Buoy 01 the last ~12hrs. Jumping between ~3@17 up to 6@16. Also reading as very west at times (280-300), so some Kauai shadow. Couple of the biggest readings were at 8-930pm (last night) and then 1-4am this morning. That’s about 11 hours out at this swell period/direction, so should be seeing some pulsey sets. There’s lots of sand on the reef from all the north swells lately. Today is more west and should help to clear it out before the weekend.

Like we wrote in our Hawaii Winter Outlook, the trend this season has leaned more northerly, with an abundance of north and northwest swells. @haydenrodgers_1 doesn’t mind. There was a window of surf on the North Shore today from 11-3 and @mitchell.peterson_ made the most of it. 🎥 @the_wonderful_life_of “The wind went offshore and the rain stopped and it was absolutely cooking. This set came in and I was just in the perfect spot for it! I put my head down and paddled as hard as I could. As I was dropping in the wave was drawing so much water off the reef, I pulled up into it and the thing was so big and round and I was just pumping and then it sucked in and everything went white and it just blew me out.”
