Včera jsem byl v sauně a měl jsem možnost si po strašně dlouhé době prolistovat pár takových těch high-profile časopisů a magazínů. Hele, jako můžete mi vysvětlit, to někdo normálně kupuje a čte? Za prvé je to v podstatě komplet reklama, i když to stojí relativně spoustu peněz, za druhé výběr témat je konstantně tak strašně plochý, že je naprosto nezajímavý, a za třetí, když už je tam náhodou téma, které potenciál být zajímavé, tak je zpracované tak povrchně, že i koukání na fotky je vyloženě ztráta času. Mimochodem, fotky. Proč, v době doslova přehlcené vizuálními médii, jsou časopisy z 80 % fotografie? Já to vlastně nechápu ani v cestovatelském magazínu - trvá mi asi dvě sekundy, abych zjistil, jak to vypadá v Lesothu, ale když už se tam někdo táhnul, tak bych si rád přečetl, jaké to tam je. Ale mě úplně nezajímá číst, jak jsou místní neuvěřitelně přátelští (hint: přátelští lidé jsou úplně všude), mě zajímají ty praktické věci. Potřebuju tam vízum? Je složité ho získat? Čím se tam platí? Co je nejoblíbenější místní jídlo? Jaké jsou náboženské zvyky, je tam něco, na co si mám dát pozor? Co si mám sbalit za oblečení? Prší tam hodně? Je tam běžné dostupná pitná voda? Jenže to by musel ty články psát někdo, kdo tam opravdu byl… Celkově z médií úplně zmizela zvídavost. V rozhovoru o Partners bance dotazovaný zmínil, že v prvním roce museli dvakrát vyměnit IT tým. Proč? To by mě zajímalo. To má potenciál informace, která by se mi mohla v profesním životě hodit. Ale na to se nikdo nezeptá. Takových věcí tam bylo víc, ale všechny prostě prošly bez povšimnutí. Rozhovor měl dvě stránky a asi pět fotek. Oproti tomu “recenze” na nový Aston Martin měla stránek šest. V byznys magazínu. Koho zajímá, že AM je ve městě příliš tvrdý, ať si koupí Svět Motorů. Byznysový magazín si člověk koupí proto, aby získal nějaký vhled do byznysu, ne? Ale ono je to celé jenom virtue signaling. Kdybych neměl asi milión rozdělaných projektů, pustil bych se do pokračování toho, co jsme před dvaceti lety začali, tedy vlastního webzinu. Dneska je úplně jiná situace, tehdy jsme měli kvalitní obsah, ale nebyl způsob, jak to monetizovat, a dobrovolnické nadšení prostě časem vyprchá. Dneska je jednoduché z toho udělat byznys, ale složité najít kvalitní obsah. Jenže ona je ta laťka strašně nízko. Když vidím, co dnes získává ocenění, co lidi chválí, co propagují. Asi jsem náročný, ale já nechci číst, poslouchat, ani se koukat na něco, co si můžu zjistit sám. Já potřebuju věci, na které bych sám nepřišel, které by mě samotného nenapadly, které mi rozšíří obzory. No nic, tak jsem si postěžoval 🤷‍♀️

Has anyone experimented with shorter work week? I’m thinking about getting Wednesday off permanently, dedicating Monday and Tuesday to meetings and Thursday and Friday to focused work. As a consultant, I am theoretically able to do it, but I’m not sure if I can actually pull it off. Any thoughts?

I’ve been thinking about a conversation I had with my friend. She was recently on vacations with her family and she complained how “touristy” her husband and kids are. They don’t want to know the places, interact with people, just chill on the beach and in restaurants. On the other hand, she was hiking, visiting museums, appreciating the culture, interacting with locals, tasting the food… I couldn’t say it to her, because she would be mortally wounded, but from my point of view, she was the tourist one. Her family was just visitors, but isn’t the point of tourism to do exactly what she is doing? I have always imagined that the point of “not being a tourist” was to sort of blend in? Day after day I am getting more confused with this world where words have meanings so fluid they don’t have any shared meaning at all…

I believe there is much more interesting mechanism at play besides simple dopamine effect of social media. And yes, I believe that it is intentionally exploited. View quoted note →

Můj pohár trpělivosti už asi definitivně přetekl. Potřeboval bych najít někoho spolehlivého a samostatného, kdo bude ovládat základy správy M365 prostředí (+ Intune) a chtěl by si buď vydělat nebo aspoň přivydělat na projektech (zejména migrace M365). Alespoň základní povědomí o bezpečnosti výhodou. Základní požadavek: Nemít lachtaní nemoc. Všechno ostatní se vyřeší.

There is one thing that bothers me a bit. Not much, but I wonder whether it’s me who is doing something wrong or whether I have unrealistic expectations. I work with lots of tech people and most of them are completely un-curious. I haven’t heard “how does this work?” from a colleague in ages. Oh, they are in awe and constantly wonder “how do you know THAT? Can you teach me that?” Well, guess what, I can’t. How do I know this or that? Because I went and tried to build it myself, usually. And failed, more often than not. I run plenty of things that don’t work properly. “How could you possibly know what this error mean???” Well, because I run this obscure code at home, even though it is not useful to me, but it was interesting 🤷‍♀️ I have a colleague “I want to do what you do”, but when I tell him to just go out and play, he doesn’t have time. He needs to take care of family, two kids and so on. No time to play. I also have family with two kids. But playing with tech is not a hobby. It’s trade education. Because CV never landed me a job. But “I know why you are getting this…” more than few times. Where did the curiosity go? How can people be in tech and not wanting to know how things work?

Most of the time I’m happily living in my bubble of weird, but sane people. Seeing how broken the outside people are is constantly taking me by surprise. I believe that the “elites” have found out that breaking men is really a difficult task. But if they break women, the women will break men for them, then. And here we are. But the tool is not sex, it’s not money or power. It’s not even feminism. It’s simpler, much simpler than that. It’s gaslighting. We are constantly gaslighted so much that we are not able to see the truth anyway. I have a conversation with a close friend - written conversation so we can reread it as much as we like - and both of us see exact opposite. She says that I’m gaslighting her, but to me, it is exactly what she’s doing to me. I am not able to see her angle and she’s not able to see mine. Who’s right? It does not matter. It does not matter at all. The society is broken, people are broken and no Bitcoin is going to fix this. No amount of kindness and turning the other cheek is going to fix this. We have eroded our trust to each other. And there is no simple way to fix this. Certainly no technology can fix this. Our “elites” turned us against ourselves. Not only against each other, but against ourselves. We no longer have trust in ourselves. But I don’t gaslight. No matter how you or anyone else try to frame it, I don’t do it. If I’m wrong (and I am most of the time), I apologise. I can change my worldview, I can change my mindset. If I’m wrong, make an argument, convince me. My biggest wins in life were when someone proved me I’m wrong. But that’s not how this society works. We gaslight. That’s what we do. Please don’t do it. Thank you.

I’ve been thinking… I’m running few private services for friends and family (like Plex, Matrix, mailserver…) and maybe there are some of you out there who’d like to use private self-hosted services, but cannot/don’t want to self-host themselves and would be willing to part with modest fee to cover the expenses. Or maybe you run similar services too and would like to join forces to not being the only one to manage it. Either way, feel free to reach out to me, I would love to get more people involved.

I just don’t get why everyone is so surprised about this. Symptom driven diagnostic is fantastic case for AI application and very poor case for humans. Let AI do all the “debugging” tasks like symptom collection and encyclopaedic knowledge application and make doctors relevant again by finding them useful jobs. View quoted note →
