Yo hi! I usually post things about linguistics, science, biology, environmental science, health, and recently, some stuff on numbers. I'm an advocate for freedom of communication I'm a bunch of things but I mainly focus on environmental science, training people into becoming scientists, and an array of aspects about communication. A strong future for humanity and life depends on good community and good communication. I accidentally became a linguist, and I've made a few alphabets, my latest one is called NewEng and it does a good job of encapsulating both English pronunciation & its accents, and English etymology.

So they're allowing ai generated code into the Linux kernel. I'm sure nothing will go wrong.

Use Wine? Pro tip for desktop apps: Sym-link the folders you need into the virtual drive_c/users/username directory. Then you can access them directly through the dreaded wine file browser.

Very funny that gnome apps launch instantly in KDE, compared to 0.5-3+ seconds in.. gnome

Pro tip: DEcrease automation in your life. You'll find yourself more in touch with things and people. You'll be more aware of what you're doing; and what your devices are doing; and what condition your objects, spaces and relationships are in.

i hope the kde dev community recognise the direction of the wind and don't make kde+plasma dependent on systemD. it's time to re-connect to the fully-modular nature of linux

when you look... you'll see quite how different the gnome devs are from the kde devs. kde & plasma respect the user -- that's us, the community. gnome fucking hate their users.

You can translate in at least 5 ways: 1. Transcribe the sound 2. Translate word for word 3. Translate the root words 4. Translate the idea 5. Translate into or via a metaphor relevant to the target language

Communication tip: When explaining a concept to someone that doesn't exist in their language, you need to bypass their bamboozle filters. Don't start by telling them the word or about the concept — this is what will trigger their bamboozle filter. Instead, start by explaining the concept.

If you are peaceful during times of systemic violence, you are not peaceful, you are enforcing the stance of the oppressors. And you do so because the systemic violence isn't affecting you or people close to you.

Photoshop is such a lil twerp. Even with 9GB free space, it refuses to run because "the scratch disks are full". Well I even attached a second SSD with 70GB free but it didn't accept that (despite it working fine last week)

If you're having trouble with updates in Arch right now, if it's about libvpx, probably one package depends on an older version. For my installation, it turns out that the chaotic-aur build of waterfox is outdated. Luckily someone packaged a binary build in the aur (thanks 🙏) image

more reasons to abandon systemD "Disallow usage of generative AI to write code #41085" -- "Closed as not planned" Poettering and Bluca, both microsoft shills, weigh in on how they adore "AI" and then closed the issue as "not planned". Linux is being destroyed & betrayed from within.

systemD-less quest update: I bootstrapped myself into Devuan by installing PeppermintOS. It's ok but there hasn't been a real release since 2024 or 2025. So I changed the sources to Devuan's Trixie and upgraded. Then found that Trixie is also woefully out of date (~Jan 2025). So I upgraded to Devuan Excalibur (testing, 7.0). It was a nightmare but I finally got a well-working system! Init is sysV. Notes: lightDM can't log in to Wayland sessions. Sddm can't run a Wayland login screen.

Anyone have experience with non-systemD Linux distros? I'm thinking about Artix. I was about to set up a NAS so I'd like to get my subsystem choice right before doing so
