In a new TIME interview, Trump rejected the idea of nationalizing frontier AI labs but floated taking Intel-style equity stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic. "I might. Maybe I could do that." He pointed to the government's 10% stake in Intel as a model. OpenAI reportedly offered Washington a 5% stake back in July. Anthropic has denied any such talks.

A new Congressional Research Service report highlights how unstable the regulatory ground is for banks that want to touch bitcoin. Since 2017, federal regulators have repeatedly reversed course on which crypto activities banks can engage in as administrations and agency leadership change. Without legislation, any expansion stays vulnerable to reversal. The GENIUS Act already made stablecoin activities permissible for bank subsidiaries. But broader activities like custody, lending against Bitcoin collateral, and dealing in digital assets still depend on who's running the agencies.

Macro analyst Jordi Visser on why AI agents are the next bitcoin catalyst: "For the Incumbents to invest, two things need to happen. They need to question the assets they own that are worth $900 trillion. At the same time, there needs to be a translator that's a language they understand. AI agents are another bridge."

The Dutch House passed the "Actual Return on Box 3" Act in February. If it survives the Senate, starting January 2028 the Netherlands would tax actual annual returns on wealth, including unrealized gains, at 36%. Bitcoin and other digital assets are already classified as Box 3 assets. Your bitcoin goes up 50%, you owe taxes on that gain without selling. It crashes the next year, you get a loss carry-forward but the prior bill doesn't unwind. A September 29 cabinet letter proposed that "financial instruments" like shares and bonds would be taxed only on sale from 2028, with other assets following in 2030. Bitcoin isn't named specifically, but Dutch coverage reads the implication as bitcoin ETPs potentially getting realization-based treatment while directly held bitcoin stays on annual mark-to-market until 2030. That classification isn't confirmed. If the distinction holds, the form of your bitcoin exposure determines your tax treatment. Not a direct attack on self-custody, but a structure that economically favors intermediated products over holding your own keys. The bill still needs Senate approval and there's been enough pushback that revisions are expected. image

Samourai Wallet developer Keonne Rodriguez just published his latest letter from federal prison, documenting what he calls "the absolute worst 30 days of my life." Rodriguez was transferred from FPC Morgantown to FCI McKean, a facility four hours away. What should have been a short drive turned into a 30-day ordeal through the Bureau of Prisons transit system. Two trans-continental flights, three multi-hour bus rides, 23-hour lockdowns behind iron bars, and cell mates ranging from murderers to worse. He requested a transfer furlough to transport himself at his own expense. Minimum security classification, no incident reports, self-surrendered. "On June 8th my request was denied without explanation." Instead he was stripped, searched, shackled at the ankles and cuffed at the wrists, with a chain wrapped around his waist connecting it all together. "The end result being that you could not lift your arms or hands much higher than your waist, and you could walk only in painful short shuffling steps." He was loaded onto a Cold War-era plane with safety stickers in German and Russian, flown to the BOP's Oklahoma City transit hub, and packed into a concrete holding cell where inmates immediately began smoking K2 made from rat poison. The staff at OKC were "breathtaking in their incompetence. Every last officer was less than useless, all of them wearing an expression of bewilderment as to how they happened to stumble into this predicament of dealing with a plane load of convicts, as if normally they were payroll accountants or copy clerks." This is part one. Rodriguez is serving five years in federal prison for building non-custodial Bitcoin privacy software. Full letter: image

A new report from Matthew Boyer found that MSCI's proposal to exclude "non-operating companies" from its indexes was developed inside an internal project literally named "DATCOs" (Digital Asset Treasury Companies), revealed by metadata buried in the public PDF. In 2025, MSCI tried to remove bitcoin treasury companies directly. After backlash it shelved the rule but froze their index footprint and blocked new entrants. Months later it returned with broader language that drops any mention of bitcoin but reaches the same companies. The test relies on "operating assets," a term not defined under GAAP or IFRS. MSCI draws the line. Applied broadly, companies building satellites, lithium mines, or chip fabs could fail the screen simply for being in a capital-intensive construction phase. MSCI has $21 trillion benchmarked to its indexes and has characterized its role to regulators as rules-based market measurement. Deciding which lawful companies count as real businesses goes well beyond measurement. It's discretionary capital allocation with no accountability to the millions of Americans whose retirement savings follow these lists. image
