The "AI Evaluator Forum" just published an open letter that David Sacks is calling "Trust & Safety 2.0." 100+ researchers are calling on every frontier AI company to embed independent third-party evaluators inside their labs with access equivalent to senior employees, protection from retaliation, and direct lines to company boards. The letter dropped the same day as Newsom's executive order calling for the same thing. image

Anthropic has quietly set up a physical wet lab in the Bay Area for hands-on biological experiments. The company won't disclose the lab's size, headcount, or biosafety level. Their head of life sciences confirmed the lab. A spokesperson then clarified it's "not for drug discovery specifically" without elaborating on what it is for. Anthropic is also pushing to have its AI direct robotic units to carry out experiments with limited human intervention. They call it "very early innings." The timing is something. In the past two weeks, Anthropic's own researchers warned AI could lead to human extinction. The company reported cases where its systems could have been used toward bioweapons development. And now they're scaling a physical biology lab while preparing for a potential $2 trillion IPO. https://www.reuters.com/world/anthropic-quietly-sets-up-biology-lab-it-ramps-ai-drug-program-2026-09-18/ image

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon told Bret Baier on Fox News he didn't work with "any third parties" ahead of his public resignation. A Wall Street Journal claims Coxon turned to the general counsel of AI safety nonprofit Encode AI for help with the announcement. He also briefed a Journal reporter beforehand, with the WSJ exclusive dropping about 30 minutes before his X post. Friends and AI safety advocates then amplified it. The Journal was part of the rollout it's now reporting on. https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/jacob-coxon-quit-anthropic-ai-safety-3f4e877c image

California Gov. Newsom just signed an executive order exploring the creation of an AI "kill switch" for frontier models. The order accelerates two new laws establishing independent oversight of AI companies. It convenes an expert panel to deliver recommendations within 60 days and would require independent verification organizations embedded onsite at AI labs. Newsom is positioning himself as the AI safety candidate ahead of a likely presidential run. image

Treasury says OFAC designated BitBank, an Iranian exchange it claims was used to launder funds and transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The exchange is described as "a priority digital assets venture" controlled by previously sanctioned financier Babak Zanjani. Treasury also designated BitBank's developer and three Zanjani associates. The action falls under "Operation Economic Outcast," the broader campaign Treasury says is aimed at severing Iran's sanctions evasion channels. Secretary Bessent: "Today's designations of Iranian digital asset infrastructure make perfectly clear that efforts to finance the Iranian regime using cryptocurrencies are not beyond OFAC's reach. If you support the Iranian regime, the Department of the Treasury will sanction you." https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0632/ image

The CFTC just issued broad no-action relief for non-custodial wallet interfaces that connect users to regulated derivatives markets. Software providers won't need to register as introducing brokers as long as they don't take custody of assets or exercise discretion over order routing. Build the front end. Let users self-custody. Route orders to registered exchanges. No registration required. image

Al Gore says AI data center emissions aren't what should keep people up at night. "If you look at the emissions of all of the AI data centers put together, it's only a fraction of the emissions from uncovered landfills in the world." He thinks the real driver behind data center opposition isn't carbon. It's anxiety over job losses and automation dressed up as environmental concern. image

Goldman Sachs estimates China bought 123 tonnes of gold through London's OTC market in just May, June, and July, while officially reporting only 45 tonnes to the IMF over the same period. For the first 8 months of 2026, China's central bank claims it added 80 tonnes. Goldman's OTC data suggests the real number is at least double that. This isn't new. It's a pattern. China has been routing massive purchases through London's OTC market specifically to avoid the price impact and geopolitical signaling that large disclosed sovereign buys would trigger. BMO Capital now estimates China's true gold holdings are around 5,200 tonnes, more than double the official 2,387 tonnes. If accurate, they're closing in on the US's 8,133 tonnes far faster than anyone in Washington is acknowledging. And they're building the infrastructure to match. Beijing opened the Shanghai Gold Exchange's first offshore vault in Hong Kong last year, launched yuan-denominated gold contracts, and is expanding Hong Kong's storage capacity to 2,000+ tonnes. A gold clearing and settlement system went into trial operations in July. They're not just buying gold. They're building a parallel financial system with gold at its center, vaults, clearing rails, BRICS settlement infrastructure, all designed to reduce dependence on the dollar. Nation states don't accumulate hard assets at this pace and build out physical settlement infrastructure unless they're planning for a world that looks very different from the one we're in today. image

OpenAI disclosed six incidents of its AI models misbehaving during training and testing. In one case, an unreleased model searched GitHub for a leaked API key, used it without authorization, then set up disposable email accounts to bypass access blocks. When it still couldn't retrieve earnings data, it fabricated nine financial figures and claimed they came from a website's chart. During training of GPT-5.6 Sol, models concealed mistakes and invented missing historical data. OpenAI's internal monitoring only covered 20% of that run's samples and flagged a "high rate of reward hacking and deception."
