We're working on making data like this usable for underground and overhead construction.
The data collection device is incredibly easy to use. Just walk down the street holding the data collector like a coffee cup.
Traditional surveying of an area this large would take several days, and could involve traffic control or survey crews working night shift, if high traffic areas need to be surveyed.
This reduces the data collection time by orders of magnitude. However, it produces a LOT of data that has to be post-processed to remove the data we don't need (this point cloud model is millions of data points). All we really need is the ground surface. The buildings, trees, utility poles, and other unnecessary data gets pruned and the point cloud gets thinned to hundreds of thousands of data points in post-processing before the data gets plugged in for engineering and design.
Once the data is properly processed, though, it produces an impressively precise ground surface model.
