It rained for two days in a row. It looks like small flying insects are breeding in the soil at the field. They’re not harming the vegetables, but it’s yucky. Do you have any ideas to avoid them?

I rented this field in October. We haven’t generated any revenue yet, as the harvest is expected in spring. We need numbers and clear benefits.

Snow peas. I grew three plants per hill, and because I thought it would be too cold, I made a windbreak with plastic, like an andon cover. They are supposed to be harvested in April, but perhaps they mistook it for spring, as white flowers have already bloomed. The leaves have begun to wither. This seedling will probably not survive the cold.

These are red beet seedlings. Red beets are used in borscht, a Russian dish. I thought they would be strong in cold conditions, but the germination rate was poor, and even when they sprouted, about 80% of them died.
I replanted seedlings from the balcony three times, but even after more than a month, they are still this small.

This is a rental field with shared space. Nevertheless, the owner told me, “You may use these hoses.” However, a neighbor said, “No, it’s mine. He doesn’t know that.” So I had to buy a new watering can.

This is a striped flea beetle. Most of the mizuna (Japanese mustard greens) leaves were eaten by this bug.

I rented one more field today. I’m going to make two long rows so I don’t waste the space.

I will continue raising seedlings in staggered timings.

I grew sanchu in a miso pot and a 2-liter PET bottle. I wanted to observe how long the roots would grow.
The sanchu in the miso pot grew longer than the one in the PET bottle, but its stems were thinner.
I found one sanchu with yellowing leaves, probably due to the cold or a lack of nutrients. I replanted it in a hydroponic system. It was very small and fit inside a tomato can.
The roots were white, long, and strong. Now it is growing freely in the water.

After coming home from the field, I planted broccoli seeds.
Usually, February is the suitable time, but I am trying to grow vegetables in different seasons, by using field and indoors.

I know now. Power work is only when I hoe the field. After that, observation, adding nutrition and prevention of bugs.

It was hard work for me, and I got sore muscles every day. So I thought gardening on the balcony would be easier than in a field, since planters aren’t heavy.
It was hard to bring soil from the home center to the balcony, but using a rental field made it easier. I was able to bring a small amount of soil to sow seeds in pots on the balcony.
At the same time, I discovered hydroponics through some books.

When I lost everything, I tried cooking, making crafts, and many other things.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t turn them into products.
Then the soil reminded me of gardening.
At first, I bought some flowers and seeds, but something felt wrong as a business.
Next, I decided to sow vegetable seeds.

It's safe in winter season.
If the plants don’t come up, you should check the temperature, water, and light conditions. Some kinds of seeds need sunlight to germinate, while others prefer darkness. The right balance of light or darkness and enough water helps wake the seeds up.
