Jack Kirby’s art unknowingly saved lives during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. The CIA needed a convincing story to extract six hidden American diplomats who were held captive, so they convinced Iranian authorities by showing the comic legend’s fantastical concept art for a previously unproduced film entitled ‘Lord of Light’. For this illustrious issue of Heavy Metal #276 from 2015, we get the untold POV of Barry Ira Geller—a real producer who sold the art to a fake Bravo TV series (AKA operation Argo)—and per his lore, “we negotiated a price for two LoL drawings to be shown on an as-yet undisclosed TV show, but which one? When would the images be shown? No answers were forthcoming and I almost forgot about it once I received the check,” he writes for this issue. Naturally, the true nature of the art surfaced in national news reports. What I love about this story is that Barry gives us a heartfelt prequel to the genesis of this project (before operation Argo)… that they truly DID try to make a LoL film (as an aspiring film producer who bought the rights to Roger Zelazny’s novel of the same name)–about majestic Gods from the Hindu pantheon. As a long standing fan of Kirby, Barry reached out to him to collaborate. Their connection was serendipitous as Kirby had also tried to get the rights to this IP. The story details Geller working with Kirby on the screenplay and concept art to accompany LoL (to eventually shop around to movie producers). It’s a fascinating story of him recounting key conversations about Kirby’s genius and trying to bring this sublime universe to life. Their goal was to enlighten audiences with the ethos of LoL “embedding emotions into objects, psychic abilities of Gods… the goal was to transform reality,” Barry explains. “Jack was totally into changing the consciousness of the world, outside of comics…” which also included plans for a theme park called Science Fiction Land. While the film and park were never realized… the art took on a new significance…and per Jack and Barry, ultimately still had a tremendous impact upon the world, just different than how they originally envisioned.
