I think that a public figure like the Ugandan opposition leader speaking about it made a major difference. People follow influencers. IMHO the way to bring more people to Nostr is to approach every influencer mistreated, censored, shadow-banned by centralised social media and convince them to come to Nostr. They will bring their audience. Just like youtubers at risk of censorship will plug their rumble or alternative channel in every cast, X influencers would plug their Nostr in their bio as a backup.

Bitchat is great, but bluetooth range limits its utility as an emergency alternative for Internet shutdown situations. Iran right now being a good example. @calle is working on adding wifi mesh capacity. That would be a nice range extension. An Uber style private hire vehicle does an estimated 10x trips per day as a private car in a city the size of London. An extra 100.000 taxis/ubers could take 1 million private cars off the streets. It seems like low hanging fruit to reduce traffic problems in large cities. My guess is that there are political reasons not to do it (taxi licensing is a source of money for many municipalities).
