@Damus (and any other clients), When npubs I follow change their profile pics (and other data), it confuses me since I no longer recognize them at a glance. Please allow me to decline automatic pic updates for npubs I follow. Just cache the old value, and maybe show me a little icon indicating that a newer pic is available. (Not pointing fingers, but @Laeserin is a problem.) image

#programming #ai #philosophy Programming is the art of turning fuzzy requirements into hard computer instructions. Translating a poorly defined “want” into code. As higher-level interfaces emerge, increasingly mediated by AI, the job of programmer is still the same, but increasingly philosophical. What is it that you (your manager, your customer) really want? What should happen when things go wrong? What does value mean in this context? These are programming questions in the age of AI. It’s less about syntax, and more about satisfying contextual human desires.

Focusing on “job creation” is asinine. I could create billions of jobs at the stroke of a pen. Just ban washing machines. Now there’s a major shortage of professional clothes washers. Jobs galore! Has it improved quality of life? Who cares?! JOBS!!

#statistics #rant I’m at my high schooler’s back-to-school night. At the entrance, you pick up your kid’s schedule. There were four people at the table, one for each grade: 9, 10, 11, 12. Of course, as kids age, parents are less likely to go to this event (having gone in previous years). So there was nobody in the Senior line, and long lines for underclassmen. Now, a much better approach would be to have lines based on last name, irrespective of grade: A-G, H-L, M-S, T-Z. (These letters are guesses, ideally each line would have ~25% of students). That way, no matter which grade shows up, the load would be roughly balanced. This should be obvious. The high school has been running these events for years and years. It should be no surprise that the load is unbalanced. And yet they do it the same, line-producing way each year. This is basic statistics folks, not rocket science. /rant

#Bitcoin price prediction: crab sideways until next Spring. Rationale: 1. Bitcoin competes for attention in memespace. People’s surplus attention will be wrapped up in politics. 2. Inflation is hurting people’s pocket books. They don’t have surplus money to spend. 3. The Fed pump won’t get going immediately. It’ll take time for lowered rates to prompt reallocations. 4. Recent buyers and traders will be dumping before New Years to lock in their capital losses for 2024. What am I missing?

My grandma passed away last year between Christmas and New Years. In her last days, I visited her. One morning, my aunt was giving grandma her pain management pills. “Here is your Tramadol” she said. After she took the pills, I said, “I could use a double dose of Fuck-it-all”. We all laughed. Even as her body gave out, and she lost her memory, she never lost her sense of humor. I miss you, grandma.

Freedom of Speech isn’t about being able to say what you want to say. It’s about being able to listen to whom you want to listen. To read what you want to read. To learn what you want to learn. Listeners are harmed when speakers are silenced.
