Enjoyng learning more about the mechanics of how inflation (ie: declining purchasing power) is created. “…the central bank uses its reserves to purchase government bonds, thus financing the government. “As governments ultimately control central banks, despite their constant protestations to the contrary, they can lean on them to purchase their bonds to allow for more government spending. “When a central bank buys larger quantities of its government's bonds, the value of its currency declines, since it funds these purchases by inflating the money supply.” - @Saifedean Ammous Ammous, The Fiat Standard, pg 61

“We need inflation in the system to maintain economic growth” is like saying “Wearing a Batman costume with fake muscles makes us look muscular” Nominal vs Real Fake muscles, like inflation, makes you *look* like you have big muscles. But that’s *Nominal* growth, not *Real* growth. *Real* growth comes from lifting weights and eating properly. Not from a fake-muscles costume. Same with an economy. *Real* growth comes from technology and productivity. Not inflation.

How a watered-down pint of beer is like inflation in the economy. A pint of beer 🍺 starts out as 16 ounces of 100% beer, just like an economy starts out on a 100% gold standard. Then your buddy, who only wants to help, gets the bright idea of helping you make your beer go further - by watering it down. So he adds 16 ounces of water to your existing 16 ounces of beer. And voilà! You have 32 ounces of watered-down beer. But now it takes twice as much beer to get the same buzz of 16 ounces of 100% beer. In an economy, your buddy just wants to be helpful and gets the bright idea to double the supply of money in the economy. And voilà! You have twice as much money but watered-down purchasing power. Yeah, there’s twice as much of it (32 ounces of beer and twice as much money). But damn, dude, yuck! Watered-down beer tastes like ass. And watered-down purchasing power takes $2.00 to buy what used to cost $1.00.

Which segment of society is most HURT by inflation? The poor. Which segment of society is most HELPED by inflation? The rich (who own assets). Which institution fights tooth-and-nail to make damn sure there is 2-3% inflation in your life? The Federal Reserve.
