After losing my job in LTC due to mandates, I started a nonprofit in the local food sector. My income has been limited, but my husband covers the bills, allowing me flexibility during this phase. I benefit from wholesale pricing and growing our own food to save money.
In January, needing more income and with my business facing limitations, I began an intensive training program assisting people with developmental disabilities. I joined an incredible organization that doesn't mandate shots in our region and pays above-average wages. It's filled with talented professionals who have been cast out by other organizations due to their choices.
Currently working as a casual employee, I'm seeking a sleep night position that better suits my needs. The role involves helping clients with their nightly routines and morning needs, while also allowing time to sleep. The environment is caring and nonviolent, and the work is rewarding. My days will be 100% free for my homestead and family if this comes to pass.
Initially, I started a business to achieve flexibility for homeschooling and homesteading, but it often took me further from that goal. Now, I'm considering a night job that allows me to prioritize my family and pursue online content without financial pressure.
It's essential to remain open to new opportunities that align with our personal goals instead of feeling stuck in a particular path.

My husband glanced at the ground beef and mentioned, "We're out of eggs..." since I had given our last dozen to my mom for taking care of our kids overnight.
Fortunately, we had a jar of freeze-dried eggs from when we had stocked up.
Here's the rehydration ratio we used, which worked perfectly for making meatballs tonight: 2tbsp:2tbsp h20 + 5minutes
We complemented our meal with Jerusalem artichokes and home-canned potatoes, fried in bacon grease, and served with a rich mushroom gravy made from coconut milk. 

Our chicks hatched over the weekend and we invited the #homeschool crew over to watch the process. What a joy to watch the kids snuggle the chicks.
We ended up with 8 chicks in the brooder, one hatched late so she gets another night in the incubator.

Why I Admire Cassie…I mean Jan.

In the rural town of Dryden, ON you can always find Jan hard at work. Whether she's tending to her garden, slugging soil at 🇨🇦Canadian Tire, or crafting delicious preserves, her dedication is inspiring.
With a warm and infectious laugh, Jan responded to our young co-op coordinator who suggested her logo displayed 1980. "That's fine," she giggled, "but you could easily add another 25 years or so."
Jan firmly believes that no squash should be sold for more than a dollar each. Regardless of their size, even if they reach 14 lbs, she ensures you'll always leave with a truck full of her produce. She won’t sell it on the co-op she says—cause you won’t like my prices.
As we discussed the pricing of Jan's Jam, we considered our pricing structure and how it reflects her needs. Jan's primary concern was affordability for the customers, as she wants everyone to have access to fresh, locally-sourced, and lovingly-made food. Times are tough, she said.
As I gazed into Jan's eyes, I couldn't help but ask, "Have prices gone up for you too?" Her stunning yet sorrowful eyes met mine, silently revealing the truth she couldn't bring herself to admit. The burden weighing heavily on her heart, it was clear that producers, like her, were feeling the relentless, tightening squeeze of financial pressure.
Eventually, we agreed on a $7 price point back in her pocket, but it took some convincing. Here's how the 807 Food Co-op pricing model supports Jan and other local producers:
1. Jan needs $7 to make her efforts worthwhile and stay in business, so we do the calculations to sustain her livelihood.
2. An additional 5% is incorporated for packaging, processing, and pickup fees.
3. Jan contributes 10% of her sales to maintain the organization's foundation, including software, marketing and labor costs.
5. All producer members contribute $50 per year towards the growth of the organization.
BUT .GOV STRIKES AGAIN AND TELLS JAN SHE NEEDS A LICENSE—
We are raising funds to operate a shared, local production facility (Food Hub) to get the Health Unit off Jan’s back (and hopefully everyone thereafter).
#GOV squashed my milk runs (which were like 95% “compliant”) and now they are trying to squash co-op members like Jan doing things safe but old school. She can’t afford to rent my licensed kitchen, I can’t afford it alone, nobody can afford to comply around here…We want to secure the future of “compliance” for our region so we can aid in knowledge transfer and get a decentralized food system going before everyone ages out completely. Average age right now is about 70–not kidding. 93year old Bob Wall is still diggin up taters.

Homeschooling Parents (or those with strong-willed children) - How do you maintain patience?
This is the first year my eldest is in Grade 1 (we opted out of Kindergarten due to COVID BS), and I finally feel like I have a bit of breathing room. However, the plan is to resume homeschooling by Grade 3 when I'm better prepared to take on the responsibility. There is too much to juggle right now but I’m actively streamlining things.
My 6-year-old tends to be quite challenging and we often engage in power struggles to accomplish daily tasks, even as simple as getting him to wear underwear or pick up after himself.
I want to homeschool again, but I'm afraid I might become resentful if I don't change our approach. Managing my own motivation for house duties is already tough enough, so I'm in need of new strategies to prevent us from constantly butting heads in the day-to-day.
