The drive to our nearest beach growing up was about half an hour, and just as you reached the edge of town there was a tunnel of old Cyprus trees you’d drive through. We hoped it was a good omen for getting tubes at the beach (which was a very rare occasion). Anyway this shot brings back a lot of childhood memories.

In the Spring of 2023 we spent a few weeks exploring the D'Entrecasteaux Channel south of Hobart aboard Heart of Gold.
Sometimes you hear a song that sticks with you and becomes a soundtrack for a time. On this trip, Old Note by Lisa O’Neil was that song.

One of the most incredible things I’ve experienced was a pod of dolphins swimming with us as we were sailing through phosphorescence, leaving blazing trails of light as the swam along beside us for what must’ve been at least 20 minutes on a moonless night. Truly magical ✨

It’s amazing how quickly time flies. Almost thirteen years ago, when I was 26, I flew to New Zealand and bought Heart of Gold during uni holidays. I spent about 6 weeks learning to sail her in the Hauraki Gulf before sailing her single handed back home across the Tasman Sea. The ocean is a great teacher, and with all the sailing I’ve done on Heart of Gold since the crossing, I still learn something new everytime I take her out.
I recently wrote a piece recounting that voyage for Afloat magazine, you can read the entire article in the link below:

I love these moments at sea, where everything can be put in perspective and even the challenging days have their moments. Albatross off the coast of Tasmania 🪶

Whistling kites, or fire kites. These birds are known to pick up burning branches from a fire and drop them into the bush to flush out prey 🔥
