Earlier today, while entering the train station, I overheard three women speaking Bisaya.
"Which station are we getting off at?"
"EDSA Station."
Without even thinking, I smiled. Those who know me know I can't resist moments like this, so I jumped into the conversation and said," Ka mga Gwapa man oy!”
They laughed, and from there, the conversation flowed so naturally. We shared stories, and I eventually learned that they were flying to Malaysia tomorrow to work as domestic helpers.
When we got off the train, we all experienced that all-too-familiar moment of embarrassment when the train card refuses to work at the exit while a long line of people waits behind you. I swear, that situation never gets any less awkward. 😂
Before we parted ways, I showed them where to catch a ride to SM Mall of Asia since it's one of those places many first-time visitors to Manila want to see—a landmark that makes you feel like you've truly been to the city.
It's funny how just a few minutes with complete strangers can make Manila feel a little more like home. Even though I'm from Manila and not Bisaya by birth, learning the language has given me the chance to connect with people in ways I never expected.
Hearing Bisaya, sharing a few laughs, and meeting fellow Filipinos reminded me that even in unfamiliar moments, God has a way of placing the right people in your path—people who quietly remind your heart to keep going and never lose courage.
