Of all the places I have traveled, one place that inspired and awed me was the Temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia… When I visited, it was early morning… there was a fine mist in the air, hanging mystery and magic heavily over the ruins like a garment perfectly suited for its wearer… I walked around in stunned silence, taking in the incredible talent, skill, and artistry that these incredible humans invested into building this wonder… Around mid-day, I took a break under a tree to watch a local man sketch in his notepad… we didn’t speak each other’s language, but we had a fun little sign & body language exchange where we both communicated what a beautiful day it was and how incredible the temple looked in the morning I mimed wanting to see his sketches, and he showed me some of his drawings… He was talented, sketching with a fine-tip basic black pen and nothing else… I mimed my admiration for his drawings, and he didn’t even hesitate to choose the one I had stopped a bit longer to admire, and offered it to me… I tried to give him some money in exchange, but he refused… so I went and bought us lunch, and brought it back so we could eat together… We mimed about our families and lives for a while, eating our food, and when I finally stood and shook his hand to say goodbye, he made me wait, and took out another drawing and gave it to me… I knew he didn’t want me to offer him money again… this was a gift, and doing so would ruin the brief friendship we had just formed… I can still recall that moment with crystal clear perfection… the feeling of the heat and humidity, the warmth on my left shoulder where the sun had broken through the canopy… I can still see his wide, crooked smile, weathered skin, green gym shorts and faded tan threadbare shirt… I was honored and humbled by the gift I saved those drawings for the past 15 years, tucked away in storage while I continued to travel and work all over the world… and recently, finally, I had them framed… After over 20 years of traveling, I finally have a home base, and look forward to seeing this art every day… reminding me of the beauty in the world and the kindness of strangers #nostr #introductions #artstr #art #drawing #cambodia #angkorwat #travel #adventure #plebchain #bitcoin #hodl #coffeechain #goodmorning #GM #writing #story #kindness #beauty #friendship

In the year 2000, I studied abroad in Australia after winning a scholarship to study creative writing… on the way, I stopped in Fiji for a couple weeks and went to the islands. After a day of exploring the island of Mololo Lailai, I noticed a local man who was carving one of the indigenous hardwoods to make beautiful pieces… I would get a coconut, buy him one, and watch him carve… I didn’t have a lot of money at the time, but I offered him $20 and asked him if he could carve me something that showed his skill, so I could remember the passion he had for the attention to detail and patience he brought to his pieces… He told me to come back to visit him in 3 days, and when I came back, he presented me with this wooden bowl… and when I saw it, I was completely blown away… He carved these 2 connected bowls from a single piece of wood, by hand, utilizing a strategy where he carved an unbroken wooden ring and the tabs on each bowl first, and then painstakingly carved both bowls and somehow made them balance perfectly and sit together or separate… in 3 days 😳 Every time I see it, I am reminded that passion, dedication, and patience are critical to producing anything of beauty… and it inspires me to take the longer and harder road, to put in the time and effort to do my best in whatever skill I am pursuing… #nostr #introductions #plebchain #coffeechain #bitcoin #patience #woodworking #carpentry #dedication #patience #fiji #art #beauty #sculpture #interesting #story #passion
