Happy birthday to William Beebe, born July 29, 1877!
Known as the “father of modern marine biology,” Beebe was an American explorer, biologist, and natural history writer.
Originally an ornithologist (someone who studies birds), Beebe developed a long-lasting fascination with the tropics after a 1903 expedition to the Florida Keys. In 1925, he led the Arcturus expedition to explore the South Seas, and brought along a boxed diving outfit: the Miami-made Miller-Dunn Divinhood. He began writing of his observations while diving, calling this underwater world the “society of wonders.”
Beebe then set his goals deeper. He worked with inventor and engineer Otis Barton to develop the Bathysphere, a small, unpowered, spherical submersible that allowed them to dive to a record-shattering depth of 3,028 feet in 1934 off the coast of Bermuda. Beebe described the fantastic creatures he observed at depth through a telephone line to the surface, and illustrator Else Bostelmann brought these descriptions to life, giving the world its first look at living deep sea creatures.
Beebe became known for writing about animals as they were alive in their natural habitats, rather than simply studying specimens, as was common practice at the time. After his dives in the Bathysphere, he wrote:
"After these dives were past, when I came again to examine deep-sea treasures in my nets, I would feel as an astronomer might who looks through his telescope after having rocketed to Mars and back, or like a paleontologist who could suddenly annihilate time and see his fossils alive."

By the time he descended into the underworld, Orpheus was already spoken of as the finest musician the world had ever produced, a gift the ancient sources trace directly to his parentage.
His father was said to be either Apollo, god of music himself, or the Thracian river god Oeagrus, and his mother Calliope, chief of the nine Muses.
Whichever bloodline the poets favored, the result was the same: a voice and a lyre capable of moving anything that could hear, rivers, mountains, wild animals, even trees, which were said to uproot themselves and lean toward him as he played.
That gift meant nothing against death itself, not at first. When his wife Eurydice died from a snakebite, Orpheus did something no mortal before him had seriously attempted.
He walked down into the underworld alive, armed with nothing but his lyre, to demand her back from its rulers.
What happened next is described in unusual detail by the Roman poet Ovid, who imagined the entire underworld pausing to listen.
As Orpheus sang his case before Hades and Persephone, explaining his love and his loss, the effect rippled outward through every corner of the realm of the dead.
The bloodless ghosts wept, something ghosts were not otherwise known to do.
Tantalus, cursed to reach eternally for water and fruit that pulled away from him whenever he stretched toward it, momentarily stopped clutching at the retreating wave.
Ixion’s wheel, spinning him in endless torment, stood still. Tityus, whose liver was eaten daily by vultures as punishment, was left alone by his tormentors for a moment.
And Sisyphus, condemned to push his boulder up a hill forever only to watch it roll back down each time, simply stopped and sat on the stone itself, listening.
