On this day in 1982, the Stevie Nicks single “Edge of Seventeen” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #73 (February 20)
The song with the distinctive guitar riff played by Waddy Wachtel, was written by Nicks for her debut solo album “Bella Donna”, and got to #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but couldn’t break into the Top 10.
It also reached #11 in Canada.
The title came from a conversation she had with Tom Petty's first wife, Jane, about the couple's first meeting.
Jane said they met "at the age of seventeen", but Jane's strong Southern accent made it sound like "edge of seventeen" to Nicks.
The lyrics were written by Nicks to express the grief resulting from the death of her uncle Jonathan and the assassination of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980…
In 2021, it was listed at #217 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

On this day in 1980, the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers LP “Damn The Torpedoes” peaked at #2 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (February 9)
Their third studio album was a breakthrough for Petty and the Heartbreakers.
It was their first Top 10 album, and was only kept from #1 by Pink Floyd's “The Wall” in the US.
Tom Petty's response to being anchored at #2 was:
“I love Pink Floyd but I hated them that year!”
This classic LP produced two songs that made the Top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Don't Do Me Like That" (#10) and "Refugee".
It also went all the way to #1 in New Zealand, #2 in Canada, and #15 in Australia.
In 2020, the album was ranked #231 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
