The nice thing about rivers is that they are running 24/7 unless you have a severe drought and they dry up. You’ll want to ensure that there is a water depth of at least 1 meter for optimal clearance.

Using a wind turbine in conjunction with a solar setup is a good combination. You can maximize power input during the day and still have some energy being created at night and in bad weather.

Steam has been used to power machines for a long time. Steam from the boiling water will expand and pressurize the engine. The pistons will start to be pushed back and forth inside the cylinder. This is connected to a generator that is powered by rotary force from the steam.

All of the different ways to generate power this far have been using renewable energy. While they are excellent choices for long-term power generation, they take time to put together. Using a gas or diesel generator is a great option to keep you powered until you run out of fuel.
It is generally a good idea to have a few jerry cans full of fuel at any given time. A couple of 5-gallon gas cans can power a generator for several days, depending on what you’re powering.
Having a fuel generator on hand is a good option for the inevitable repair and maintenance days you’ll have with other renewable options. For example, solar panels may need to be repaired which equals more downtime for power production. While you fix the problem you can substitute the power loss with a gas generator.
7. Fire

Fire produces energy that can keep you warm and help you cook food. This eliminates the need to have electricity on hand. Additionally, a metal wood stove can heat a large home as long as it is properly installed. You can even use it for cooking and baking food.
Compared to stoves that use fuel like propane and butane, wood heat is dry which helps keep you warmer. Burning the right wood is important as different wood output different heat amounts, measured in British Thermal Units (BTU).
Final Thoughts
When the grid goes down there will be no access to the main power plants in your area. Taking the steps to ensure you are generating sustainable power will minimize the impact of being shut off from city hydro. Remember to consider using two or more ways in case one fails or is less efficient than you thought.

Today marks 100 years since the birth of Verner Panton, the Danish designer whose visionary approach to furniture transformed the way we think about form, colour, and space ❤️
Among his most iconic creations is the Heart Cone Chair - the boldest, most striking piece from his Series K, which first brought him international acclaim in 1959.
Derived from his earlier Cone Chair, the Heart Cone Chair is built around the same simple geometry: a cone. Its name comes from the distinctive backrest, where two rounded, upward-sweeping wings form a heart shape when viewed from the front. Two versions were produced, with the wings set either closer together or further apart.
A Pop Art–inspired reinterpretation of the traditional wing chair, the Heart Cone Chair combines sculptural drama with unexpected comfort. Its high backrest creates a sense of enclosure, making the chair feel snug yet visually striking.
Grouped around a table, multiple Heart Cone Chairs create a ‘room within a room’ - an effect Panton explored in interiors such as the Astoria hotel and restaurant in Trondheim in 1960. At the same time, a similar spatial concept was being developed by Arne Jacobsen, under whom Panton had earlier worked, most famously in the Egg chair.

When Marcus Aurelius died on March 17, 180 AD, his eighteen-year-old son Commodus inherited an empire at its zenith. The Pax Romana—two centuries of unprecedented peace and prosperity—was ending not with foreign conquest but with the character of one man. Within twelve years, Commodus would transform Rome from a disciplined superpower into a theatrical stage for his delusions, demonstrating how rapidly institutional strength dissolves when leadership prizes spectacle over governance.
Commodus rejected everything his father represented. Marcus Aurelius embodied Stoic philosophy, military discipline, and administrative rigor. His son craved adulation and pleasure. Commodus immediately negotiated peace with the Danubian tribes—abandoning his father's hard-won military gains—and rushed back to Rome for a triumph he hadn't earned. He delegated actual governance to a succession of freedmen and favorites while devaluing the currency, the largest debasement since Nero. The denarius lost 21% of its silver content under his watch, funding lavish games and bribes to maintain popularity with the mob while alienating the Senate through confiscatory taxation.
His megalomania reached pathological levels. Commodus declared himself the reincarnation of Hercules, renaming Rome itself "Colonia Lucia Annia Commodiana." He renamed all twelve months after his own titles. He fought as a gladiator in the Colosseum—not privately, but publicly, forcing senators to watch their emperor debase imperial dignity while clubbing cripples he pretended were giants. He once beheaded an ostrich, then walked to the Senate section carrying the severed head and his sword, silently threatening them. They chewed laurel leaves to hide their laughter.
The conspiracies began in 182 when his sister Lucilla attempted assassination. The plot failed spectacularly when the assassin announced, "This is what the Senate sends you!" before attacking—giving Commodus's guards time to intervene. The subsequent purges killed senators, prefects, and family members alike. Each failed conspiracy pushed Commodus deeper into paranoia and autocracy. His advisors—Saoterus, Perennis, Cleander—accumulated power until rivals murdered them or mobs tore them apart. By 192, even Commodus's mistress Marcia and his praetorian prefect recognized they were next on his execution list. On December 31, they poisoned his food. When he vomited the poison, they sent his wrestling partner Narcissus to strangle him in his bath.
The Senate declared him a public enemy, demolished his statues, and restored Rome's original name. Pertinax succeeded him, ruling only 87 days before assassination triggered the Year of the Five Emperors—a civil war that sold the empire at auction to the highest bidder. Commodus's twelve-year reign destroyed the succession principle that had produced five consecutive competent emperors, revealed how thin the veneer of Roman stability truly was, and established a precedent for military strongmen to seize power through force rather than merit. The Severan dynasty would temporarily restore order, but Rome never recovered its lost innocence. One man's narcissism had demonstrated that institutional legitimacy, once shattered, cannot be rebuilt—only replaced.
