On this day in 1980, the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers LP “Damn The Torpedoes” peaked at #2 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (February 9)
Their third studio album was a breakthrough for Petty and the Heartbreakers.
It was their first Top 10 album, and was only kept from #1 by Pink Floyd's “The Wall” in the US.
Tom Petty's response to being anchored at #2 was:
“I love Pink Floyd but I hated them that year!”
This classic LP produced two songs that made the Top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Don't Do Me Like That" (#10) and "Refugee".
It also went all the way to #1 in New Zealand, #2 in Canada, and #15 in Australia.
In 2020, the album was ranked #231 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

On this day in 1986, the Talking Heads single “And She Was” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #45 ( February 8 )
Drummer Chris Frantz said of the song, "It's a story about a woman who has the power to levitate above the ground and to check out all her neighbors from a kind of bird's eye view.
And the guy who's writing the song is in love with her and he kinda wishes she would just be more normal and, like, come on back down to the ground [Laughs], but she doesn't. She goes floating over the backyard and past the buildings and the schools and stuff and is absolutely [upside-down] to him in every way."
On the liner notes of “Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads”, songwriter David Byrne recalled:
"I used to know a blissed-out hippie-chick in Baltimore.
She once told me that she used to do acid (the drug, not music) and lay down on the field by the Yoo-hoo chocolate soda factory. Flying out of her body, etc etc.
It seemed like such a tacky kind of transcendence… but it was real!
A new kind of religion being born out of heaps of rusted cars and fast food joints.
And this girl was flying above it all, but in it too."
The track from their “Little Creatures” LP went to #9 in Ireland, #10 in Australia, #16 in New Zealand, #17 in the UK, #31 in the Netherlands, and #54 in the US.

The original manuscript of Jack Kerouac's classic 1957 novel "On the Road" is about to be sold at auction — where it's expected to fetch as much as $4 million.
Typed out over a feverish three-week period in April 1951, this draft was created on one continuous scroll measuring 121 feet long.
Because he could type extremely quickly and hated having to pause to load new pages into his typewriter, Kerouac always liked to use long scrolls that wouldn't slow him down.
Likewise, this manuscript pauses for neither paragraph breaks nor chapter titles, instead presenting its epic tale of Beat Generation misadventures in one unbroken stream.
This draft even uses the characters' original names — taken straight from the real-life writers and artists that inspired the novel's legendary exploits — before the publisher insisted on changing them.

The film was based on an album by The Who of the same name, a synth-heavy rock opera that resonated so much with Britain's youth that it sparked a revival of mod culture The film (like the album) is set in 1965 at the zenith of mod culture in England.
It explores the life of Jimmy Cooper, a young mod in London who yearns to escape the shackles of his dull life as a post room boy living with his parents.
