This remarkable object represents the protomé (forepart) of a rhyton in the form of Pegasus, the mythical winged horse. The figure is shown rearing dynamically on its hind legs, mouth open as if in motion, with the ears swept back, conveying speed and controlled power. A finely rendered bridle runs along the neck, indicated by a delicate line of punched dots, demonstrating the goldsmith’s mastery of detail.
Between the ears rises a short, backward-curving horn—an archaic and symbolic feature that may reflect local Thracian interpretations of the Pegasus myth. The wings, attached to the shoulders, are modeled in high relief, their feathers carefully articulated; although only partially preserved, they still convey a strong sense of volume and movement.
The sculpture is fully three-dimensional and was cast in high-purity gold, originally serving as the terminal spout of a ceremonial drinking vessel used in elite or ritual contexts. The rhyton was accidentally discovered in 1968 during agricultural work near the village of Vazovo, northeastern Bulgaria. Unfortunately, the object suffered severe damage at the time of discovery, and substantial portions are now missing.
Despite its fragmentary state, the protomé stands as an exceptional example of Thracian toreutics of the Classical period, combining Greek mythological imagery with local artistic traditions and aristocratic display.

How can you study species that dissolve when they are removed from the ocean? That's the challenge of studying ctenophores, a group of gelatinous plankton commonly known as comb jellies.
While on a National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition in Colombia, researchers used professional-grade equipment to capture high resolution recordings of the comb jellies. The images, a few of which are seen here, were then used to identify and make detailed observation of these sea creatures.
The resulting inventory — the first of its kind for Colombia's waters — identified 15 comb jellies, six of which had never been seen before in this region.
"This paper beautifully illustrates what happens when scientific rigor meets the art of underwater photography," shares Juan Mayorga, a Pristine Seas marine scientist and one of the authors of a new study detailing the finds.
"These fragile organisms dissolve when collected in nets, so they can only be studied through images. Our team's photography didn't just document beauty; it enabled taxonomy and discovery, resulting in six new species records for Colombia."

She never learned to write her name, but her son made sure everyone would know it. Her name was Bryna. She left a small village in what is now Belarus, bringing only hope with her when she sailed to America in the early 1900s.
She was joining Herschel, the man she would marry and who had promised her a better life.
Instead, she arrived in Amsterdam, New York. It was not the famous city, but a struggling mill town. She did not find prosperity, but crushing poverty. She did not have a loving husband, but a man who gambled away what little he earned as a ragman and never called her by her name. He only said, "Hey, you."
Bryna could not read or write, but she could work. She scrubbed laundry until her hands bled, cleaned, survived, and raised seven children with almost nothing.
When there was no money for food, she walked to the Jewish butcher and asked for bones that most people threw away.
She carried them home and boiled them for hours, making a thin broth last for days to keep her children alive.
Her youngest, and only son, was named Issur. Everyone called him Izzy.
Years later, he remembered, "On good days, we ate omelettes made with water. On bad days, we didn't eat at all."
But Bryna had something poverty could not take away: belief. When young Izzy talked about his impossible dream of becoming an actor, she did not laugh. She encouraged him. A ragman's son becoming a Hollywood star? She believed it before anyone else.
Izzy grew up to become Kirk Douglas.
He became a legend—Spartacus.
As Issur transformed into Kirk Douglas and ascended the heights of Hollywood, he carried the memory of the woman who boiled bones into every board room and onto every film set. His success was not merely a personal victory but a retrospective vindication of his mother’s suffering.
In 1949, at the dawn of his greatest fame, he made a gesture of profound love by naming his independent film company Bryna Productions. It was a defiant act of reclamation; the woman who had been denied her name in her own household would now have it emblazoned on the silver screen for millions to see. Every film produced under that banner served as a public acknowledgement of the debt he owed to her resilience.
This tribute reached its peak in 1958 with the release of The Vikings. In the bright lights of Times Square, Kirk Douglas brought his elderly mother to see something she never imagined. High above the crowds, a huge billboard read, "Bryna Presents The Vikings." For a woman who could not read or write her own name, seeing it lit up in the sky moved her to tears.
She died just four months later, comforting her son in her final moments, but she left knowing her name was no longer hidden in a small mill town. Kirk Douglas lived for more than a hundred years, but he always said his greatest achievement was making sure the world would remember the name of the woman who believed in him when she had nothing else.

On this day in 1982, The J. Geils Band single “Centrefold” went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (February 6)
“Centerfold” was written by the band's keyboard player Seth Justman, who wrote or co-wrote all the tracks on the “Freeze Frame” LP.
Songfacts reports that Justman claimed that the reason you didn't hear much synthesizer on earlier J. Geils albums is because they couldn't afford them: The band was trapped in the record company debt cycle, constantly owing money despite their success.
The former blues-based rockers really latched onto the new wave sound with this one…
Despite releasing their debut studio LP way back in 1970, the J. Geils band had never cracked the Top 10 with a single anywhere in the world before.
Now they had what was to be their biggest hit, staying in the #1 spot in the US for a massive six weeks, earning them a spot touring with The Rolling Stones, the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and heavy rotation on the new cable network MTV.
The song from the “Freeze Frame” LP went to #1 in the US, Australia, and Canada, and was a Top 5 song in the UK, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, and South Africa.
In 2018, it was ranked at #66 on Billboard's All Time Top Songs.
The video directed by Paul Justman, brother of the song's writer Seth, became an MTV favourite, and allegedly the school girls in the clip were students at a Dance Academy above the recording studio, who were asked to be in the video at the last minute…

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT JUST RELEASED 3.5 MILLION PAGES ABOUT JEFFREY EPSTEIN. WHAT THEY REVEAL IS DAMNING.
On January 30th, the Department of Justice released what it claims is the final batch of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted s*x offender who died in federal custody in 2019.
3.5 million pages total, including 2,000 videos and 180,000 images.
This came after Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November 2025 with a 427-1 vote in the House and unanimous Senate approval, forcing the government to make these files public.
IN 2007, THE FBI HAD EVERYTHING THEY NEEDED TO STOP EPSTEIN.
The evidence was overwhelming, and agents expected him to be indicted in May 2007.
Instead of facing federal charges, Epstein got a deal.
Alexander Acosta, who was the U.S. attorney in Miami at the time and later became Trump's Labor Secretary, signed off on an agreement that let Epstein avoid federal prosecution entirely.
Epstein pleaded guilty to just one state charge of soliciting someone under 18 and got 18 months in a county jail with work release privileges, meaning he could leave during the day.
He served 13 months.
The three assistants who were supposed to be charged alongside him faced nothing.
If that 2007 indictment had gone through, everything that happened afterward could have been prevented.
THE FILES SHOW HOW CONNECTED EPSTEIN WAS.
Emails show correspondence with powerful people across politics, business, and entertainment, including Steve Bannon, Elon Musk, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Prince Andrew.
In one 2010 email exchange, Epstein appears to try setting up Prince Andrew with a 26-year-old Russian woman, writing "She 26, russian, clevere beautiful, trustworthy."
There are photos of Bill Clinton with Epstein, emails discussing potential visits to Epstein's private island, and thousands of references to various public figures.
The files show Epstein had an office at Harvard, complete with a key card, years after his 2008 conviction.
DESPITE THE DOJ CLAIMING THEY PRIORITIZED VICTIM PROTECTION, THEY FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY.
Attorneys representing over 200 survivors say the release was "the single most egregious violation of victim privacy in one day in United States history."
Hundreds of victims' names appeared unredacted in the files, including women whose names had never been publicly associated with the case before.
Attorney Brad Edwards, who has represented Epstein victims for over 20 years, told ABC News his firm received constant calls from clients whose names were suddenly public.
"It's literally thousands of mistakes," he said.
The DOJ claims only 0.1% of pages had victim information unredacted, but for those victims, that percentage means nothing because their privacy is already gone.
THE FILES STILL AREN'T COMPLETE.
The DOJ says 6 million pages exist, but they're only releasing 3.5 million.
They claim the rest contains child abuse material, duplicates, or unrelated documents, but both Democrats and Republicans say the department is violating the law by not releasing everything.
Representative Thomas Massie, who led the effort to pass the transparency law, said the release "grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law."
Even members of Congress can't access the full, unredacted versions without making special appointments.
THIS ISN'T JUST ABOUT ONE MAN'S CRIMES.
This is about a system that had the evidence, had the victims' testimonies, had a draft indictment ready to go in 2007, and chose not to act.
When that system failed, it allowed years of additional abuse to happen.
The files show that powerful people knew what was happening and chose to look the other way or actively protect Epstein through legal deals that shouldn't have existed.
Now, nearly two decades after that 2007 decision and five years after Epstein's death, the government is finally being forced to show its work.
But even in doing so, they're failing to protect the people they say they're protecting.
The files are public now, though much is still redacted and thousands of pages are completely blacked out.
What's clear is that this wasn't a failure of evidence or a lack of knowledge about what Epstein was doing.
This was a failure of will to hold a connected, wealthy man accountable.
That failure had consequences that lasted years and affected countless lives.

Typed out over a feverish three-week period in April 1951, this draft was created on one continuous scroll measuring 121 feet long.
Because he could type extremely quickly and hated having to pause to load new pages into his typewriter, Kerouac always liked to use long scrolls that wouldn't slow him down.
Likewise, this manuscript pauses for neither paragraph breaks nor chapter titles, instead presenting its epic tale of Beat Generation misadventures in one unbroken stream.
This draft even uses the characters' original names — taken straight from the real-life writers and artists that inspired the novel's legendary exploits — before the publisher insisted on changing them.
