The song from the “Parallel Lines” LP also went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and also in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, #2 in Ireland and South Africa, #3 in Sweden, and #5 in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Debbie Harry and Chris Stein wrote an early version of "Heart of Glass", called "Once I Had a Love", in 1974–75, and recorded a demo of it.
The song was ultimately given the disco orientation that made the song one of the best-known Blondie recordings, and was referred to by the band as "The Disco Song”.
It went on to become a huge worldwide hit and helped propel Blondie from cult group to mainstream icons.
In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked the song #259 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
"Heart of Glass" ranked at #66 in the UK's official list of biggest selling singles of all-time, with sales of 1.32 million copies.
It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame as a recording of "qualitative or historical significance" in 2015.

A peasant named Pahom overhears his wife and sister-in-law arguing. The sister, from the city, boasts of the advantages of urban life. Pahom’s wife defends their rustic toil, saying, "Busy as we are from childhood tilling mother earth, we peasants have no time to let any nonsense settle in our heads. The only trouble is we haven't land enough. If I had plenty of land, I shouldn't fear the Devil himself!"
The Devil, sitting unseen behind the stove, hears this. "All right," he thinks. "We will have a tussle. I'll give you land enough; and by means of that land I will get you into my power."
Thus begins Tolstoy’s devastating fable. Tempted by the chance to own more land, Pahom gets deeper into deals, moving to new frontiers, always grasping for more. His final opportunity comes from the Bashkirs, a nomadic people who offer him a seemingly insane deal: For a thousand rubles, he can have all the land he can walk around in a single day, from sunrise to sunset. The only condition: he must return to his starting point by sundown, or he gets nothing.
The story becomes a harrowing race against the sun. Greed fuels Pahom’s legs as he marks out a gigantic circuit, pushing farther and farther to claim the ultimate prize. Tolstoy masterfully tightens the screw with every step, transforming a simple walk into a metaphysical parable about ambition, greed, and the human condition. The answer to the title’s question arrives with one of the most famous and brutally concise final lines in all of literature. It is a perfect, terrifying story about the cost of limitless wanting.

🎬 Today is the 54th anniversary of the dystopian crime movie, A Clockwork Orange! It was released in US theaters on February 2, 1972 & starred Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Adrienne Corri, & Miriam Karlin.
It was written & directed by Stanley Kubrick & it is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess.
It was nominated for 4 Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, & Best Picture & it was nominated for 3 Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor-Drama for Malcolm McDowell, Best Director, & Best Motion Picture-Drama.

Last week in 1974, the Dolly Parton single “Jolene” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #92 (January 26)
Written and recorded by Dolly Parton, “Jolene” was the first single and title track from her album.
According to Parton, the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean, at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married. In an interview, she also revealed that Jolene's name and appearance are based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph.
“Jolene” was ranked #63 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2021.
The song was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014.
It was Parton's second tune to receive the prestigious honor - "I Will Always Love You" was included in 2007.
During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show in 2018, Dolly Parton revealed that she wrote "Jolene" on the same day that she wrote "I Will Always Love You".
On the charts it went to #3 in South Africa, #6 in New Zealand, #16 in Sweden, #60 in the US, #84 in Canada, and #99 in Australia.

While February brings a winter chill to the northern hemisphere, Argentina is currently in the peak of summer.
This is the prime season for long, sun-drenched gatherings centered around the parrilla. The ritual is a direct legacy of the 18th and 19th-century Gauchos, the nomadic horsemen of the pampas who survived on vast herds of wild cattle. They developed the technique of slow-roasting meat over open fires using only wood and salt, a method that transformed tough cuts into tender feasts.
Authentic asado ignores the clock, relying on the steady glow of brasas—embers from wood or charcoal—to cook meat over a gentle heat for hours. The variety on the grill serves as a technical map of Argentine butchery. It typically begins with Provoleta, a thick slab of cheese grilled until the crust is caramelized and the center is molten, alongside Chorizo a la parrilla. The main event features Tira de asado, short ribs cut crosswise to reveal the bone, and the lean, flavorful Vacío. In the deepest rural traditions, you will still see the Asador Criollo, where whole lambs are splayed on metal crosses and roasted vertically over an open fire for half a day.

This week in 1980, the Fleetwood Mac single “Sara” peaked on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #7 (February 1)
Speaking in a radio interview for the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance in the early 1990s, Stevie Nicks said the song was partially written about her good friend, Sara Recor, who had an affair with and then married Mick Fleetwood.
The relationship between Fleetwood and Sara effectively ended the romance between he and Stevie Nicks.
In his 2014 autobiography, Fleetwood agreed with Nicks’ version of the song’s origins.
However, Nicks' former boyfriend and Eagles great Don Henley claimed that the song is about their unborn child.
In a 1991 interview with GQ, Henley recalled:
“I was building my house at the time, and there's a line in the song that says 'And when you build your house, call me.'"
Back in 1979, Nicks had said, "If I ever have a little girl, I will name her Sara. It's a very special name to me”, and in a 2014 Billboard interview she admitted:
"Had I married Don and had that baby, and had she been a girl, I would have named her Sara...
It's accurate, but not the entirety of it."
"Sara" began as an epic 16-minute demo, which was eventually edited down to 6 minutes 22 seconds for the album version, and 4 minutes 37 seconds for the single, which leaves out the middle verse and musical bridge.
Songfacts reports that Stevie claimed the "real version" has about nine more verses and tells quite a story…
The song from the “Tusk” LP peaked at #7 in the US, #11 in Australia, #12 in Canada and New Zealand, and #14 in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The song from the powerhouse Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman songwriting team went all the way to #1 in the UK, Australia, Ireland and Norway, #2 in Germany and Switzerland, and #5 in the Netherlands.
“Devil Gate Drive” featured on her album “Quatro”, and was her second (and final) solo #1 single in the UK (after 1973’s “Can the Can”), spending two weeks at the top of the chart.

At Chichén Itzá in the Yucatán Peninsula, Maya builders installed massive stone rings high on the walls of the Great Ballcourt around 600 AD, transforming sport into ordeal.
The ring’s height and narrow opening made scoring extraordinarily rare. Players could not use hands or feet. Only hips, thighs, or shoulders were allowed to strike a dense rubber ball weighing several kilograms. The difficulty was intentional. The game mirrored cosmic struggle, movement, balance, and the maintenance of order through effort.
Carvings and texts link the ballgame to ritual, sacrifice, and elite status. One successful pass through the ring could end the match immediately, collapsing hours of play into a single decisive act. That imbalance was the point.
The ring was not just a target. It was a filter, separating routine motion from a moment considered worthy of memory.
