This month in 1988, the David Lee Roth single “Just Like Paradise” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #56 (January 16)
The song from his second solo album “Skyscraper” went to #6 in the US, #8 in Canada, #13 in New Zealand, #14 in Australia, and #27 in the UK.
Songfacts reports that Roth wrote this song with Brett Tuggle, who also played keyboards and sang backup on the album.
Tuggle toured with Rick Springfield for a few years before hooking up with Roth, and he later became a member of Mick Fleetwood's band The Zoo, which led to tours with Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks.
He came up with the track in 1987 after the “Eat 'Em and Smile” tour ended.
Diamond Dave asked his band members to come up with song ideas, so Tuggle complied, composing the music on a keyboard.
When he had the chord sequence and drums roughed out, he made a demo and took it Roth's guitarist, Steve Vai, who added a guitar part. Tuggle took it to Roth's house in Pasadena and played the cassette in his basement rehearsal space.
“He had the lyric for it at the next rehearsal," Tuggle told Rolling Stone. "It was interesting to see how fast that happened, and then to see it become the leadoff single from the second album was very exciting and thrilling for me."

On this day in 1978, the Jackson Browne LP “Running on Empty” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #45 (January 21)
The entire album was recorded on tour, either live on stage, or in locations associated with touring, such as backstage, on tour buses, or in hotel rooms, and is unusual among live albums in that none of the tracks had ever appeared on a previous studio album.
The album peaked at #3 in the US, and the title track peaked at #4 in Canada, and #11 in the US, making it one of Jackson Browne’s most successful singles.
Elsewhere, the album peaked at #5 in Canada, #8 in Australia, #-5 in New Zealand, #24 in the Netherlands, and #28 in the UK.
The title track was featured prominently in the classic 1994 film Forrest Gump as the main theme for a running montage in which Forest runs, and just keeps on running right across the United States, picking up a number of enthusiastic followers along the way!
Rolling Stone ranked it at #496 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

NARDI-GIANNINI 750 BISILURO

The Nardi-Giannini 750 Bisiluro (or "double torpedo") was a unique, asymmetrically-designed 1955 Italian racing car, featuring a twin-hull shape with the engine in the left pod and cockpit/tank in the right, powered by a 735cc Giannini engine.
Created for the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans by Enrico Nardi and Carlo Mollino, it achieved high speeds but proved dangerously unstable, famously flipping off the track due to turbulence from a passing Jaguar, ending its racing career despite its innovative design.

The Nardi Giannini Bisiluro was a 0.7-liter racing car built according to a completely new concept in 1955, which was used as the successor to the 750LM in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.
The small car, bodied by Carrozzeria Motto, was shaped like a trimaran, which lacks the right float.
In the idiosyncratic design, the engine was in the smaller, left-hand part of the car.
A Giannini 735cc engine was installed horizontally and created 62hp.
In the larger right part of the car were the cockpit and the tank.
At Le Mans, the car was driven by Mario Damonte and Roger Crovetto.
The car was extremely unstable on the racetrack.
The vehicle could tip over in a light cross wind.
During the race, the car had an accident after just five laps.
Damonte came into the lapping traffic of the top vehicles.
The pull, created by the much faster 3-liter cars, raised the Bisiluro and it overturned.
However, the speed of the racing car was so slow that the Nardi was only slightly damaged and the driver was uninjured.
Nardi did not pursue the concept any further and the Bisiluro was no longer used.

🎬 Today is the 35th anniversary of the Disney adventure drama movie, White Fang! It was released in theaters on January 18, 1991 & starred Ethan Hawke, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Seymour Cassel, & Susan Hogan.
It was directed by Randal Kleiser & it is based on the novel of the same name by Jack London. It has had 1 sequel in 1994.

🏰Fenestrelle Fortress (Forte di Fenestrelle), a historic military structure located in the Italian Alps.
Built between 1728 and 1850 by the Kingdom of Savoy to defend against French invasions, it is considered the largest fortress in Europe and is also known as the "Great Wall of Piedmont".
The structure stretches approximately 3 km along the mountainside in the Chisone Valley.

The Moto Guzzi 850 GT California is a classic touring motorcycle, first launched in 1971, known for its powerful V-twin engine, comfortable riding position with footboards, and distinctive American-inspired styling that made it popular worldwide. It was developed from the V7 police motorcycle used by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Performance: The engine produced approximately 55 horsepower (40 kW) at 6,100 rpm for early models and was designed for reliability and long-distance cruising.
Frame: It utilizes a durable duplex cradle tubular steel frame, designed by Lino Tonti.
Braking System: The motorcycle featured an innovative linked Brembo braking system (one front and the rear disc operated by the foot pedal, the other front disc by the hand lever) which was considered highly effective for its time.
Designed for touring, it came with a standard seating position, footboards, a heel-and-toe gearshift, a tall windscreen, and optional side-mounted panniers.
The "California" model was styled with the American market in mind, featuring a classic cruiser look intended to compete with Harley-Davidson models.

On this day in 1973, the Elton John single “Daniel” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #38 (January 20)
Another brilliant song by the classic Elton John and Bernie Taupin collaboration, “Daniel” appeared on Elton’s 1973 album “Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player”.
Taupin wrote the lyrics after reading an article in either Time or Newsweek about a Vietnam War veteran who had been wounded, and wanted to get away from the attention he was receiving when he came back home.
“Daniel” went to #1 in Canada, #2 in the US and New Zealand, #4 in the UK and Ireland, #5 in Switzerland, #7 in Australia and South Africa, #8 in Norway, and #15 in the Netherlands.

The story is told by Humphrey Van Weyden, a soft, wealthy literary critic who gets into a ferry accident in San Francisco Bay. He's rescued or more accurately, kidnapped by the sealing schooner Ghost. The captain who pulls him from the water is Wolf Larsen. And Wolf is one of the most terrifying and fascinating characters ever put to paper.
Forget your typical pirate captain. Wolf Larsen is a self-made brute of pure intellect and physical power. He's a force of nature. He reads Darwin, Schopenhauer, and Milton in his cabin, and then goes on deck to break a man's arm with his bare hands for looking at him wrong. He believes in nothing but strength and the "yeast of life" the raw, blind will to survive and dominate. He rules his ship through sheer terror and intelligence.
Our narrator, Hump, is his perfect opposite: civilized, weak, and full of bookish morals. Thrown into this floating prison, Hump is forced to toughen up fast. The whole book is his transformation from a gentleman who's never worked a day in his life into a capable, hardened man. It's brutal to watch, but you root for him.
The heart of the book is the violent, chess-like battle of wills between Hump and Wolf Larsen. It's a battle of philosophies. Is humanity noble? Is there such a thing as good and evil? Or are we just animals in a cruel, meaningless struggle? Wolf believes the latter with every fiber of his being, and he spends a lot of time trying to prove it to Hump.
Things get even more intense when a second castaway is picked up: a poet and woman named Maud Brewster. Her presence turns the ship's dynamic into a three-way psychological war. She's another kind of strength moral and spiritual and watching Wolf try to break her, and Hump try to protect her, is totally gripping.
This isn't a cozy adventure. It's cold, wet, and violent. The sea is a character itself merciless and indifferent. But it's also impossible to put down. You read it for Wolf Larsen. He’s monstrous, but you can’t look away. You almost understand his brutal logic, even as you’re horrified by it.
In the end, it's a story about what it takes to survive, and what parts of your soul you might have to sacrifice to do it. It asks if civilization is just a thin veneer over our savage hearts. The final act, with Hump and Maud stranded on a remote island with a broken, but still dangerously brilliant, Wolf Larsen, is some of the most tense and philosophically charged writing you'll ever read.
It’s a raw, powerful, and deeply unsettling book. It sticks with you not because of a happy ending, but because of the questions it leaves clawing at your mind. It’s about the wolf inside every man, and what happens when you let it out.
