THE DOOMSDAY DJ:
TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE
On this day in 1978, Kate Bush released the single “Wuthering Heights” (January 20)
Kate Bush’s big break was when Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour was given a demo tape by a mutual friend of the family, that Kate recorded while she was still attending a Catholic girls' school in Abbey Wood in southeast London.
Gilmour was moved to help the 16-year-old record a professional demo tape which secured her a deal with EMI, and her prodigious talent took over from there…
I’m not sure what’s more impressive, the fact that she wrote “Wuthering Heights” aged just 18, or that she recorded the vocal track in only one take....
“Wuthering Heights” was of course based on the famous Emily Brontë novel, and the single went all the way to #1 in the UK, and stayed at the top for a month.
With it, Kate Bush became the first female artist to have an entirely self-penned #1 hit in the UK.
"Wuthering Heights" also spent three weeks at #1 in Australia, five weeks at #1 in New Zealand, and also topped the charts in Ireland and Portugal.
Her debut single from her debut album “The Kick Inside” also reached the Top 10 in Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland, as well as the Top 20 in Austria and West Germany.
The guitar solo is played by the talented Ian Bairnson (Pilot, The Alan Parsons Project), who allegedly played the solo with a broken arm. The engineer, Jon Kelly, said he regretted not placing the iconic solo louder in the mix.
Fun fact: Kate Bush and Emily Brontë were both born on 30 July, Bush in 1958 and Brontë in 1818, 140 years apart.
A hauntingly beautiful and unique song....
One of the two clips for the song has inspired The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever, which is an annual event held at locations around the world where participants recreate the “red dress” music video for “Wuthering Heights".

One of the all-time greats of Australian rock, Midnight Oil drummer, backup vocalist, and co-founder Rob Hirst has passed away, aged 70 (January 2026)
Rob Hirst was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, and "died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones", according to a statement posted on Midnight Oil's social media.
"After fighting heroically for almost three years, Rob is now free of pain — 'a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness,'" the statement read.
"The family asks that anyone wanting to honour Rob donate to Pankind, Pancreatic Cancer Australia or Support Act."
Hirst’s dynamic and energetic performances behind the kit, driving Midnight Oil’s music to sometimes frenetic heights have been a real signature of the band, along with his powerful vocals, songwriting ability, and trademark arm extended up high after hitting the snare.
Matching the unlimited energy of Peter Garrett out front, Rob Hirst often used unconventional percussion items on stage, like 44-gallon drums and corrugated iron, sometimes drenching his drum skins with water for effect.
As a songwriter, Rob Hirst co-wrote countless favourites from the Midnight Oil catalogue, including the Oils most successful single “Beds are Burning”, which is one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
He had a number of side collaborations over the years as well, such as the Ghostwriters with Rick Grossman from Divinyls & Hoodoo Gurus, Backsliders, and The Break with Violent Femmes bass player Brian Ritchie.
Hirst also provided the dynamite intro for the early ‘80s ABC weekly youth program Beatbox.
In 2014/2015 he collaborated with his eldest daughter Jay O'Shea (of the band O'Shea), on the song “The Truth Walks Slowly (In the Countryside)” and in 2020, an abum “The Lost and The Found”.
Jay met Hirst in 2010 following a long search for her birth parents, after they gave her up for adoption when they were teenagers.
After the news of Rob’s passing broke, tributes flowed in…
In a social media post, fellow Australian music legend Jimmy Barnes said Hirst had a "massive impact" on Australian culture.
"RIP, dear Rob. You are irreplaceable, one of a kind, and myself, my family, and all the rest of this great country will miss you so much.”
Richard Clapton wrote:
“Sometimes words are not enough - I've been saying this a bit too much lately: ‘my man's got it made, He's gone far beyond the pain, We who must remain go on living just the same -we who must remain go on laughing just the same’….”
Midnight Oil posted:
“We are shattered and grieving the loss of our brother Rob. For now there are no words but there will always be songs.
Love Always from Jim, Martin & Pete.”
The Goanna Band’s Shane Howard called Rob “a huge presence in a mighty band. He was the renewable energy power source driving the band from behind the drums.
He was a great champion of First Nations rights.
I just want to say 'Thanks' Rob for being such a bright light in the firmament. Thanks for reaching out and for your support.
Thanks from all the Goanna Band for your support.
Thanks for keeping the little flame alive and for all the light you've added to the sum of light. It goes on and on.
Travel gently, travel well. ♥️🎶”
The great Russell Morris wrote:
“Rob Hirst— you will be so missed— your personality, your humanity , and your phenomenal talent.
RIP
Russ”

On this day in 1978, the Electric Light Orchestra released the single “Mr. Blue Sky” (January 20)
A brilliant Jeff Lynne epic masterpiece that peaked at #6 in the UK and #8 in the Netherlands, the song forms the fourth and final track of the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite, on side three of the original double album “Out of the Blue”.
In a BBC Radio interview, Lynne talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to “A New World Record”:
“It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks!”
It’s appeared in movies such as “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, “The Game Plan”, and “Megamind”.

On this day in 1960, the Johnny Preston single “Running Bear” went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (January 18)
“Running Bear” was written by The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson).
It also was a hit in Australia, and went to #1 in the UK and New Zealand.
At the end of the year was ranked by Billboard as the #4 song of 1960 in the US.
Richardson offered "Running Bear" to Preston after hearing him perform in a club.
Preston recorded the song, but it wasn’t released until several months after Richardson's tragic death in “the day the music died” plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.
The squawking sax break by Link Davis was a highlight of the recording, and “Running Bear” went on to become a big party favourite in the 60s and 70s.
The background chant in the song inspired British musician Jonathan King to add it to his 1971 version of “Hooked on a Feeling”, which was replicated a few years later by Blue Swede.

On this day in 1985, the Bruce Springsteen LP “Born in the U.S.A.” returned to the #1 spot on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (January 19)
The album debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200 during the week of June 23, 1984, and after two weeks it first reached the top of the chart on July 7, appearing in the #1 spot on no less than seven non-consecutive occasions, and remaining on the chart for 143 weeks in total…
The “Born in the U.S.A.” sessions were the most prolific point of Springsteen's career, and covered more than two years (January 1982 through March 1984), producing approximately 80 songs.
It’s impossible to separate them from the songs that comprised the album “Nebraska”; and at one point, Springsteen considered combining both sources as a double-album release…
“I had these two extremely different recording experiences going," he told Mark Hagen in an interview for Mojo published in January 1999. "I was going to put them out at the same time as a double record.
I didn't know what to do."
But they were eventually two separate albums, and following “Nebraska”s release a couple of years earlier, “Born in the U.S.A.” became the best-selling album of 1985.
It actually proved to be the best-selling record of Springsteen's career; in fact one of the highest-selling records ever, producing seven Top 10 hit singles, including the title track, “Cover Me”, “Glory Days”, “I’m on Fire”, and “Dancing in the Dark”.
It also topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
Springsteen mused: “Born In the U.S.A. changed my life, gave me my largest audience, forced me to think harder about the way I presented my music, and set me briefly at the center of the pop world.”
Annie Leibovitz's famous cover photo for “Born in the U.S.A.” also became one of the iconic album covers of the era.
In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked “Born in the U.S.A.” #142 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Springsteen's iconic single of the same name was ranked 275th on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and in 2001, the RIAA's Songs of the Century placed the song 59th (out of 365).
The song is not, as some people misinterpret, a chest-beating celebration of America, but rather addresses the hardships of Vietnam veterans upon their return home, juxtaposed ironically against patriotic glorification of the nation's fighting forces.

The 1953 "Comet" Jet Car - a unique three-wheeled car built by Stanley Eakin
No flames spout from the tail pipes of a custom-built three-wheeled car, but that is the only difference between it and a space ship!
The engine is a 60-horsepower V8 mounted in the real. A single front wheel is suspended on a motorcycle fork.
The sheetmetal body is welded to the frame. Air scoops on each side of the body ventilate the engine.
The 10 tail pipes permit the hot air from the engine to escape. The unusual car was built by Stanley M. Eakin of Grove City, Ohio.
It took six years of his spare time. Top speed is about 90 miles per hour.
Only one was ever built.
The Eakin Comet jet car, a custom-built prototype was a popular feature at various auto shows in the 1950s, capturing the public's fascination with the "Atomic Age" and jet aircraft styling.
The car was often featured in media as a "car of the future".

Throwback: 🇮🇩 KRL Commuterline in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta
(Before 2012) 🚊
Train surfing was a fairly common but dangerous practice on Jakarta’s Commuter Line (KRL) before 2012. Many people, especially during peak hours or when trains were overcrowded, would climb onto the roofs of carriages to avoid paying fares or simply to get a ride when the train was full.

Barbershop Quarter (1936) by Norman Rockwell was the cover of the Saturday Evening Post of September 26.
A barbershop quartet is a group of four singers who sing music in the barbershop style, characterized by four-part harmony without instrumental support.
These groups became popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and they are still popular today| Rockwell captured their wild expressions while they are trying to hit the perfect note.
And Rockwell included a naughty detail. The man on the right is holding The Police Gazette, a magazine that was present in most barbershops. At that time, it was a gentleman's magazine covering murders, sports, and pinup girls.

Today marks a major milestone in the history of rebreather diving. After months of extensive work with the DEKRA team, the long-awaited CE approval of SIDEWINDER 2 has officially become a reality.
Certification was only the final step of a long and exceptionally complex project, encompassing not only the design phase but also the implementation of a set of sophisticated technologies, each of which alone would have been a demanding task. We are even more pleased that SIDEWINDER 2 required no design changes to meet the requirements. Although the evaluation process took much longer than initially expected, every test was completed smoothly on the first attempt.
SIDEWINDER 2 is not just another rebreather on the market. With its unique modularity, outstanding cold-water capabilities, exceptional scrubber endurance time, and ruggedness, combined with ease of diving and the signature KISS simplicity, SIDEWINDER 2 will become for CCR diving what XDEEP STEALTH 2.0 is for sidemount: a system that sets a completely new standard and becomes a reference point for all other units.
Come and visit us at boot Düsseldorf - hall 11 / K23, where you will not only be able to see SIDEWINDER 2, but also meet the people behind it.
