Happy Pizza Day 🍕
Why is World Pizza Day celebrated on January 17th? It is not a random choice. Today marks the feast of San Antonio Abate (Saint Anthony the Abbot), the patron saint of fire and the protector of pizzaioli (pizza makers).
For centuries, Neapolitan families would light bonfires on this day to thank the saint for the fire that fueled their ovens.
Before it conquered the world, pizza was the humble street food of the Neapolitan poor in the 18th century. It was a masterpiece of necessity: a simple disk of dough topped with cheap, available ingredients like lard, garlic, and coarse salt.
The evolution came slowly. First came the tomato (once thought to be poisonous!), and then the cheese. Legend has it that in 1889, Raffaele Esposito created the Pizza Margherita to honor the visiting Queen Margherita of Savoy.

He used tomato, mozzarella, and basil to represent the red, white, and green of the Italian flag—transforming a peasant dish into a national icon.

A 1930 Indian Scout 101 Motorcycle
With its low-slung V-twin engine, long wheelbase and classic red frame, the Scout 101 is one of Indian’s best-known motorcycles.
The model is rooted in history, conceived by the legendary Dublin, Ireland-born engineer Charles B. Franklin, an accomplished racer of Indian motorcycles in his homeland and on the Isle of Man in revered Tourist Trophy events. Beyond the Scout, Franklin counted the Indian Chief—the larger sister model powered by an even larger V-twin—among his greatest designs.
As well as its standing as a fine collector’s piece, the unique attributes and characteristic handling of the Scout 101 ensure it remains relevant today, almost 100 years on; its low center of gravity and near-50/50 weight distribution make the bike ideal for hill climb events and with “Wall of Death” riders.
Replacing the original Scout, the Scout 101 was introduced in 1928. Its introduction heralded a newly designed frame with a longer wheelbase and lower seat height as key features, while the bike was most popularly configured with a 740-cubic-centimeter, 42-degree V-twin engine—a signature of the Indian marque.
The model featured a “suicide clutch”—or foot-operated clutch with hand-shifter linked to a three-speed gearbox—a means of operation long since phased out, owing to the safety fears that its name suggests. The Scout 101 also gained a front hub brake, in addition to the rear brake that was fitted in isolation on the earlier Scout.
This example is thought to have previously been part of the important MC Collection in Sweden, prior to being purchased at auction by Mr. Ponder. Its general good condition would suggest that the motorcycle has previously been restored, though this is not documented. In 2019, Mr. Ponder instructed Heather’s Leathers of Clover, South Carolina, to make two custom leather fringe side-pannier bags, at a total cost of $905.77.
An iconic motorcycle, the Scout 101 is one of the finest vintage bikes of the venerated Indian brand.

Shuangta Mountain in Chengde, Hebei Province, is the foremost of the city's ten famous mountains, named after the two thousand-year-old Liao Dynasty pagodas standing atop its two giant peaks.
How did the ancients build these pagodas in such a perilous location? This engineering marvel from over 1300 years ago remains a mystery.
Emperors such as Kangxi and Qianlong once ascended this place. Ji Xiaolan's description, "Standing majestically opposite each other, they resemble two pagodas from afar," captures its essence. The ingenious craftsmanship and cultural relics blend here, inspiring contemplation.

On this day in 1982, the Foreigner LP “4” was at #1 again on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (January 16)
The classic album was in the #1 position on the Billboard album chart for a total of 10 non-consecutive weeks all up, eventually selling over six million copies in the US alone.
It also became a hit record around the world, peaking at #2 in Canada, #3 in Australia, #4 in Germany, #5 in the UK, #6 in France, and #12 in the Netherlands.
The band eventually decided to call it “4”, because it was their fourth album, and also because there were now only four members of the band, after the departures of Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood.
The success of the album was propelled by songs that became some of foreigner’s most loved, like “Juke Box Hero”, “Waiting for a Girl Like You”, and of course, “Urgent”.

On this day in 1982, the Soft Cell single “Tainted Love” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #90 (January 16)
“Tainted Love” was written by Ed Cobb, and originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964, but it was not a hit until the Soft Cell version in 1981.
The track from their LP “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret” went all the way to #1 in Australia, the UK, South Africa, Canada, Germany and Belgium, and was a Top 10 hit in the US, Switzerland, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand and Austria.
The synth-driven new wave dance hit was the best-selling single of 1981 in the UK, and spent a then-record breaking 43 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100.

On this day in 1981, the Dire Straits single “Romeo and Juliet” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #49 (January 17)
The song from the brilliant and acclaimed “Making Movies” LP was one of the love songs of its generation…
Written by Mark Knopfler, the song alludes to Shakespeare’s 16th-century play about the iconic young lovers and was inspired by his failed relationship with Holly Vincent, the lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and the Italians.
The song tells the story of a Romeo who is still deeply in love with his Juliet, but she now regards him as “just another one of [her] deals.” Knopfler has both directly stated and subtly suggested that he felt Vincent was using him to advance her career.
The line, “Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him,” references an interview with Vincent in which she recalled, “What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn’t handle it and we split up.”

This week in 1977, the Wings LP “Wings Over America” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #13 (January 15)
The live triple album was recorded during the American leg of the band's 1975–76 Wings Over the World tour.
In addition to Paul McCartney's hits with Wings like “Silly Love Songs”, “Band On the Run” and “Listen to What the Man Said", the album also features performances of some of his Beatles songs, like “Yesterday", "Lady Madonna", and "The Long and Winding Road".
It went all the way to #1 in the US and Canada, #2 in Australia, #3 in New Zealand, #4 in Japan, #7 in Norway, #8 in the UK, #9 in Germany, and #10 in the Netherlands.
“Wings over America” was the first triple LP by a band to ever reach #1 in the US.
It was a bit of a gamble, and a big effort to release a triple live record.
According to Wings drummer Joe English, "it took forever to get those 'Wings over America' tapes ready for the live album.
We had to go into the studio and overdub most of the backing vocals."

The 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Cabriolet, famously known as the "Shah Bugatti," is one of the most extravagant automotive masterpieces of the Art Deco era.
This unique vehicle was commissioned by the French government in 1939 as a wedding gift for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, then the Crown Prince of Persia and later the last Shah of Iran, on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Fawzia of Egypt.
While other nations gifted airplanes or orchards, France chose to showcase its unparalleled flair for design with this bespoke Bugatti.

On this day in 1988, the George Harrison single “Got My Mind Set On You” went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (January 16)
His cover of the song written by Rudy Clark and originally recorded by James Ray in 1962, was released on Harrison’s eleventh solo studio album “Cloud Nine”.
Twenty-four years after the Beatles first topped the chart, George Harrison scored his third US #1 hit, breaking a three-way tie between Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr, all of whom had two #1 hit singles as solo artists (discounting Paul McCartney's work with Wings).
Of Harrison's three #1 singles in the US, it was the only song not written or composed by Harrison himself, and was to be his last US #1 song.
It also happened to be the #1 single in the US the week immediately preceding the induction of the Beatles into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making Harrison one of the few inductees to have an active single on the US record charts at the time of induction.
Billboard ranked the song as #3 for the whole of 1988.
It also went to #1 in Australia, Canada, Ireland and Belgium, #2 in the UK and Denmark, #4 in New Zealand and the Netherlands, #5 in South Africa, #7 in Germany, #8 in Austria, #10 in Sweden, and #11 in Switzerland.

The Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC was one of the most devastating defeats in Roman military history, fought between the Roman army led by Marcus Licinius Crassus and the Parthian forces commanded by Surena.
Crassus marched deep into Mesopotamia seeking glory and wealth, but underestimated Parthian cavalry tactics and overestimated Roman heavy infantry.
The Parthians relied on highly mobile horse archers and heavily armored cataphracts, encircling the Roman legions and subjecting them to relentless arrow fire.
Roman formations collapsed under constant harassment, extreme heat, and lack of water, leading to massive casualties and the death of Crassus’ son Publius.
After the defeat, confused negotiations took place, during which Crassus was killed, either accidentally or deliberately, by the Parthians.
According to ancient sources, his death was followed by a symbolic act in which molten gold was poured into his mouth as punishment for his greed.
Tens of thousands of Roman soldiers were killed or captured, with many survivors deported deep into the Parthian Empire.
The catastrophe ended Roman expansion in the East for decades and turned Carrhae into a lasting symbol of arrogance, miscalculation, and imperial hubris.
