Post #159: Conservation Today on International Wildlife Conservation Day, we’re reminding you that amongst the stories of extinction and endangerment, there is hope in wildlife conservation. ✨ Species once pushed to the edge have been given a second chance, like the humpback whale, whose numbers in Australia plummeted due to commercial whaling in both Australian waters and Antarctica. Thanks to community pressure and the actions of conservationists and passionate people around the world, whaling was banned in Australia in 1962, and Japan ended humpback whaling in Antarctica in 2018. Since then, their populations have finally had the chance to recover. 🐋🙌 And then there’s the green turtle, removed from the endangered list earlier this year, a milestone that shows just how powerful long-term protection and persistence can be. 🐢 When we work together, take action, and give wildlife the space to recover, incredible things can happen. Remembering American musician, composer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, actor, and filmmaker Frank Vincent Zappa (21 December, 1940 – 4 December, 1993) who died of prostate cancer 25 years ago today, aged 52. A highly productive and prolific artist, earning widespread acclaim from critics and fellow musicians, he had some commercial success, particularly in Europe, and worked as an independent artist for most of his thirty year plus career. His work was characterised by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experiments, musical virtuosity, and satire of American culture. His honours include an induction into the 1995 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the 1997 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at number 71 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time," and in 2011 at number 22 on its list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." With Ozzy out front, Black Sabbath were one of the pioneers of the heavy metal genre, and one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time. After his success with Black Sabbath throughout the 70s, Osbourne was fired from the band in 1979 due to alcohol and drug problems, but went on to have a successful solo career, releasing 12 studio albums, the first seven of which received multi-platinum certifications in the US. Osbourne's total album sales from his years in Black Sabbath, combined with his solo work, are over 100 million… Osbourne reunited with Black Sabbath on several occasions. He rejoined in 1997 and helped record the band’s final studio album, 13 (2013), before they embarked on a farewell tour that ended with a February 2017 performance in their hometown, Birmingham. In early July 2025, he bid a final farewell to fans with a Black Sabbath reunion, telling thousands of heavy metal enthusiasts in Birmingham – where the band was formed in 1968 – that it was “so good to be on this stage” as he performed his last set from a large black throne.
