🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Where pigeons get their sense of direction Pigeons (Columba livia) seem to be able to sense magnetic fields by detecting tiny electrical currents in their inner ears. image Researchers performed advanced brain mapping as well single-cell RNA sequencing of pigeon inner-ear cells. Both lines of evidence point to the inner ear as the birds’ ‘magnetoreception’ organ. Such an organ gives the birds an ‘inner compass’ that could help to explain their navigational nous over long distances. “This is probably the clearest demonstration of the neural pathways responsible for magnetic processing in any animal,” says sensory biology researcher Eric Warrant. Captain (later Lieutenant Colonel) Alfred H. Osman had a long-standing interest in racing pigeons: in 1898, he abandoned his career as a lawyer’s clerk and established and became first editor of the Racing Pigeon, a weekly magazine still in publication today. In his 1928 volume, Pigeons in the Great War, Osman described the carrier pigeon service as “practically infallible” and gave an unsubstantiated delivery success rate of 95-99%. The advantages of pigeons are clear: they could fly silently through the air without indication of place of departure or destination; they did not have difficulties with shellfire or gas, and were remarkably resilient against gunfire while on the wing; they were quicker than runners, mounted orderlies or dogs; they could easily fly distances of over 50 miles; finally, they were more easily replaced than alternatives such as horses or men. However, carrier pigeons did have some flaws: while they could be released from anywhere without the aid of wires or equipment, they had only one location of arrival – their home roost or loft. Additionally, carrier pigeons were not necessarily scalable: it took around six weeks to train a carrier pigeon as to where their home roost or loft was located. Furthermore, pigeons could only be used to carry short messages and so were mostly used on the frontline for espionage and for emergency messages. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Carved into a sheer mountainside nearly 2,200 years ago, the 'Bhaja Caves' in India raise a simple but staggering question: how did ancient craftsmen pull this off with nothing but hand tools? These rock-cut monasteries feature perfectly rounded columns, vaulted ceilings, and a massive chaitya hall carved out of solid basalt — all done without metal drills, electric lighting, or modern surveying equipment. Every surface had to be shaped by hammer, chisel, and sheer endurance, yet the symmetry and acoustic design still hold up today. We know Buddhist monks and artisans built them during the 2nd century BC, but the exact logistics — how many workers, how long it took, or the methods used to keep everything perfectly aligned in dark, confined rock — remain unclear. The caves stand as one of those ancient engineering achievements that remind us just how skilled early builders really were. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image On November 21, 1980, 350 million people around the world tune in to television’s popular primetime drama “Dallas” to find out who shot J.R. Ewing, the character fans loved to hate. J.R. had been shot on the season-ending episode the previous March 21, which now stands as one of television’s most famous cliffhangers. The plot twist inspired widespread media coverage and left America wondering “Who shot J.R.?” for the next eight months. The November 21 episode solved the mystery, identifying Kristin Shepard, J.R. ’s wife’s sister-in-law and his former mistress, as the culprit. The CBS television network debuted the first five-episode pilot season of “Dallas” in 1978; it went on to run for another 12 full-length seasons. The first show of its kind, “Dallas” was dubbed a “primetime soap opera” for its serial plots and dramatic tales of moral excess. The show revolved around the relations of two Texas oil families: the wealthy, successful Ewing family and the perpetually down-on-their-luck Barnes family. The families’ patriarchs, Jock Ewing and Digger Barnes, were former partners locked in a years-long feud over oil fields Barnes claimed had been stolen by Ewing. Ewing’s youngest son Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Barnes’ daughter Pam (Victoria Principal) had married, linking the battling clans even more closely. The character of J.R. Ewing, Bobby’s oldest brother and a greedy, conniving, womanizing scoundrel, was played by Larry Hagman. "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE Watch the magic of “Love of My Life” live in Rio: On this day in 1975, Queen released the LP “A Night At The Opera” (November 21) Queen’s magnum opus, containing not only the incomparable “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but diverse treasures such as Roger Taylor’s “I’m In Love With My Car”, the vitriolic “Death on Two Legs”, the epic “Prophet’s Song”, “You’re My Best Friend”, and “Love of My Life”, the song that gives you goosebumps listening to thousands of concert-goers singing it in unison… Following the trend on their previous album “Sheer Heart Attack”, and continuing through their next few albums, the songs explore a wide range of styles and genres, such as ballads, music hall, dixieland, jazz, hard rock, folk rock, skiffle, and progressive rock influences. In 2007, Chris Jones of BBC Music noted the diverse range of musical styles on the album, saying: “Sheer Heart Attack had hinted at a working knowledge of 19th century parlour balladry, 20s ragtime and Jimi Hendrix. A Night at the Opera was to add opera, trad jazz, heavy metal and more to the mix." He concluded that the album "remains their finest hour". Brian May suggested: “It has a couple of the heaviest things we've ever done and probably some of the lightest things as well. It is probably closer to Sheer Heart Attack than the others in that it does dart around and create lots of different moods, but we worked on it in the same way we worked on Queen II. A lot of it is very intense and very ... layered." As far as Freddie Mercury was concerned, “A Night at the Opera” contains “some of the strongest songs we've ever written." A modern masterpiece. It went to #1 in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, #2 in Canada, #4 in the US and Norway, #5 in Germany, #9 in Japan and Austria, and #10 in Sweden. In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at #128 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. #queen, #anightattheopera, #freddiemercury, #brianmay, #rogertaylor, #johndeacon, #bohemianrhapsody, #deathontwolegs, #loveofmylife, #iminlovewithmycar, #youremybestfriend, #classicalbum, #classicrock, #70smusic, #70srock, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Suicide was historically considered a crime in many Western cultures for centuries, largely due to a combination of religious condemnation and feudal law. In ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome, suicide was often prohibited and bodies were sometimes abandoned or denied normal burial rites, especially for soldiers and slaves. In England and Wales, it was a common law felony from around the mid-13th century until it was decriminalized by the Suicide Act 1961. For the act of suicide itself, the penalties were applied posthumously: The deceased was denied a Christian burial on consecrated ground. Instead, the body was typically interred in unconsecrated ground, often at a crossroads and in the dead of night, sometimes with a stake driven through the heart. This practice was intended to be a public deterrent and was a profound disgrace to the family. This specific punishment was abolished in England by the Burial of Suicide Act of 1823. The deceased's property was forfeited to the Crown, a punishment that could render the surviving family members destitute. This financial penalty remained on the statute books until it was finally abolished in 1870. To avoid these harsh penalties on the family, coroners' juries increasingly returned verdicts of non compos mentis (of unsound mind), which meant the individual was not held criminally responsible for their actions. This practice largely rendered the most severe legal sanctions a "dead letter law" long before they were officially abolished. In the US, many states derived their laws from English common law. While suicide is no longer a crime in the US, some states, like Maryland, have used old common laws to prosecute people for attempted suicide as recently as 2018. The reasons for criminalizing suicide evolved over time, rooted in both religious and secular beliefs: Early Christian thinkers like Augustine and Thomas Aquinas condemned suicide as a mortal sin and an act against God's will and authority, arguing that life was a gift from the Creator and taking it away showed ultimate disregard for Him. The Church denied Christian burial rites to those who died by suicide as a punishment. In feudal times, individuals were considered subjects of the king or the state. Suicide was viewed as a "felon of himself" (felo de se in Latin) and a crime against the Crown because it deprived the king of a subject and potential soldier or laborer. In the 19th century, as religious and legal sanctions softened, suicide became more associated with disgrace and mental illness. The stigma primarily affected the surviving family, who often kept the cause of death a secret. The eventual decriminalization of suicide came with the growing understanding of mental health issues and a shift in societal attitudes from punishment to compassion and the recognition of an individual's right to their own body and life. Picture: In Christian Europe, people were terrified that someone in their family would commit suicide, because the government's punishment was merciless.
