Soft Forking is like a small patch that doesn't change the fundamental code, maybe a ui update, and some minor ux bug fixes but the core back end still works, your service/app can still communicate with the servers. Whereas a Hardfork usually tends to be a Fundamental update that changes key aspects typically a security update, that's needed to access the service/app now. This is why Monero hard forks, it forces everyone to upgrade their threat models because without it your coins are put at risk, you put yourself, and everyone on the network at risk by running outdated software, so the network forces people to stay compatible, and update, or be stuck at the kids table at 30 years old.

The hardest part is starting, all the work in front-loaded, once you get the momentum, and get past the hill it becomes easier. The problem for most people (including myself currently) is the hill is super tall.
