floodlights of a remote sports ground pierce through the haze of an august evening sky. #speedpainting #plein_air_painting #artstr #paintstr #beijing #sunsetstr image
in the evening, the trees and gate of the li du shui an compound formed a clear graphical silhouette against the beautiful summer sunset sky. #speedpainting #plein_air_painting #art #artstr #artnstr #painting #paintstr #beijing #china #wacom #photoshop image
on that sunnny morning, a lady walked past wearing a tracksuit in the same pink-purple color as her umbrella. this is the bahe park, in chaoyang district of beijing. #plein_air_painting #art #artstr #artnstr #painting #paintstr #beijing #china #wacom #photoshop image
continuing the painting session that evening, I moved a few meters over to another building. what stood out to me here was how artificial light is captured by the leafs and trunk of this tree. image
light sources in a city at night are all artificial. they provide a stable lighting situation in comparison to daytime, when clouds, shadow or sun position are always changing. here I remembered the saying that light works like a splash of water - it emerges from the source, then hits nearby surfaces and rapidly weakens the further it gets away from the origin. image
let's start at the beginning, when I was testing out how this digital plein air painting might actually work. for multiple years prior, I had admired the work of a designer called patrick faulwetter, who is kind of a master in digital painting. finally, I had learned from his website how he actually did this! he didn't use mobile wacom cintiqs (the one with the screen), an ipad or whatever, he just used a laptop and a small A5 wacom intuous (the one without screen). on top of that, he used a camping chair to sit down practically anywhere and just paint what he saw. finally grasping how to pull this off, I got myself the exact same equipment and went out to sit somewhere and just paint what I saw. image
painting is fun, in the early morning or later evening, depending on the season, you get the most beautiful sunlight. with a laptop rig it's possible to stand anywhere and paint anything, digitally. I am not yet convinced if digital paintings can have an aura, as oil or watercolor paintings do, because there is no "original" version. the "original" is a photoshop file. if they can have a physical aura, then it will only be perceivable in combination with bitcoin. nothing digital had a physical aura, until 2009. image
