Our Watch Party Wednesday was a success! ๐งก
We watched Joe Nakamoto's thought-provoking video on privacy, human rights, and Bitcoin in El Salvador, and the discussion that followed raised important questions for Africa.
A few key takeaways:
๐ธ Bitcoin is bigger than price. Its values include privacy, freedom, self-custody, and individual sovereignty.
๐ธ Bitcoin adoption should never mean giving up fundamental rights. We must be willing to question governments, even those that publicly support Bitcoin.
๐ธ We need to separate Bitcoin from the state. A government adopting Bitcoin doesn't automatically make its policies pro-Bitcoin.
๐ธ Africa must learn from every experiment. As more African countries explore Bitcoin, we should build systems that protect privacy, individual freedom, and financial sovereignty from the start.
The conversation reminded us that Bitcoin is not about who controls the system. It's about building a system where no one has to ask for permission to be free.
Thank you to everyone who joined the Watch Party and contributed to the discussion! ๐งก

๐กSpotlight on Bitcoin Ekasi
๐Location: Mossel Bay, South Africa. ๐ฟ๐ฆ
About:
@BitcoinEkasi is a grassroots initiative based in the townships of Mossel Bay. Inspired by Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, it builds a real Bitcoin circular economy by paying its entire local team of surf coaches, lifeguards, teachers, and community workers 100% in Bitcoin.
At the same time, it onboards township merchants and spaza shops to accept Lightning Network payments, turning sats into functional everyday money for groceries, lunch, and services.
Some Key Objectives:
๐นBuild a thriving local circular Bitcoin economy where value stays and circulates within the township, creating economic resilience and reducing leakage to external systems.
๐นOnboard merchants and residents to seamlessly accept and spend Bitcoin via the Lightning Network for everyday transactions, from groceries and lunch to services, making sats as practical as cash.
๐นDemonstrate real-world Bitcoin adoption through tangible daily examples, such as coaches buying lunch or families purchasing essentials with sats, shifting the narrative from speculation to utility.
๐นDrive financial inclusion, literacy, and empowerment for township residents, especially youth, by integrating Bitcoin education and usage with existing community programs, helping overcome barriers from traditional banking, inflation, and limited access to sound money.
๐นInspire scalable Bitcoin circular economies across Africa and beyond by hosting visitors, collaborating with global projects, openly sharing the model, and prioritizing voluntary grassroots adoption and self-reliance over dependency-creating approaches.

๐ Readers' Friday Book Club Recap!
This week, we explored Chapter 7: The Real Cost of Big Blocks from Hijacking Bitcoin by Roger Ver and Steve Patterson, revisiting one of Bitcoin's most influential scaling debates.
Key takeaways from today's discussion:
๐ธ Scaling is a trade-off. Every design decision affects decentralization, security, and usability.
๐ธ Technology evolves. The chapter argues that storage and bandwidth costs continue to decline, making larger blocks more feasible over time.
๐ธ Node accessibility matters. A key question remains: who should be able to run a full node, and what level of hardware should that require?
๐ธ Ideas shape Bitcoin. The Blocksize Wars weren't just about megabytes, they reflected different visions for Bitcoin's future.
๐ธ History still matters. Understanding these debates helps us better evaluate today's discussions around scaling, Lightning, and Bitcoin's long-term evolution.
Whether you agreed with every argument or challenged them, the conversation reminded us why reading different perspectives makes us better Bitcoiners.
๐ Missed this session? Join us next Friday as we continue reading, asking better questions, and learning together.
