Today I'm wondering if the outcome is that AI destroys the tech industry and forces us to abandon connected devices altogether. Why would I want my new thing to be connected or even electric at all if avoidable? Around 10-15 years ago I was obsessed with the idea of connecting all the things. Now I don't want it anymore when that future finally arrived. Will it take another 10-15 years for wider society to catch up to my thinking again or will I diverge forever and just become more weird?

This weekend I saw a huge number of people dropped everything and spent days helping others. Yes bad things happened, but if you aren't inspired by that level of community caring for others you are dead inside. As long as that spirit remains Bitcoin will survive just fine.

Today's adventure in chores you should have learned about in adulting class but didn't because adulting class isn't a real thing even though it should be. I cleaned out the dryer vent, all the way from the lint trap to outside the wall. I know that usually isn't far but in my house it is kinda far and involves a booster fan because my house is dumb.

Some math on how possible various coldcard attacks are. There may be shortcuts I overlooked. Mk3: 40 bits aka 1.1x10¹². This space can be precomputed on a single GPU in around 2 weeks and a complete table of xpubs + seeds is storable in under 100 TB. Using that stored table grinding 2 of 3 wallets using all mk3 seeds is computationally possible today with the same quality hardware the attacker already showed they have access to. Any single key not from a mk3 means an address out of the lookup table breaking the brute force and lookup table attack. Mk4: 72 bits aka 4.72x10²¹. Brute forcing this entire space is not computationally doable today but may become possible with better hardware. If you can't store the table of xpubs grinding multisig wallets is also not reasonable. Simple 2 of 3 multisig would require compute the entire time across a space of 216 bits aka a 10⁶⁵ scale in decimal. This is back into Landauer limit space. Perfectly efficient computation requires the entire energy of the sun for over 200 million years. True random bip39 24 words for comparison: 256 bits aka 1.16x10⁷⁷. The 2 of 3 multisig space is 768 bits aka 1.56x10²³¹

Anyone heard a peep from opensats? Some of us have been pointing out the conflict of interest for ages and now this. Will they boot him or kill their remaining good will in the community bu standing by NVK or pretending nothing happened?

Once again distrusting people with shitty personalities has shown itself to be the wise path. NVK had a track record with things like attacking other devs unprovoked and closing open source code. Yeah, I couldn't have predicted this exactly. I can predict that people who repeatedly let you down in the past will continue to find new ways to let you down in the future. Keeping them around when you don't need to is writing them a blank check to screw you in creative new ways in the future.

I am not the best person to have on your tech team. I am even less qualified to be on your mental health team. DM someone else who is qualified. Qualified people have offered to help here on nostr. What I will say is this. Get help if you need it, for both. If you panic moved stuff slow down now and get it right, then move it again. For your next setup consider all the edge cases you considered before, all the things you wish you had done differently after living with that setup, and protections for bad entropy. I'm saying to design your new setup in a way that your coins aren't the first to move even if it is discovered that you used bad entropy again. Obvious things that would have bought you time during this bad entropy attack are multisig, a strong passphrase, and bip85. Do not assume your dice are fair. Do not assume the dice rolls to seed phrase tool you used isn't stripping entropy somehow. Do not assume your other hardware wallet used good entropy. This applies to all standing cold storage setups not just coldcard generated seeds. Do not assume your existing setup is safe, if it used a single source of entropy you aren't as safe as you could be. This is your wakeup call to redesign your setup. Move your coins to a wallet that is safe from bad entropy attacks now before hackers do. Document your new setup thoroughly. Think of it as a treasure map, don't include the keys but do include everything they will need to use them. That means wallet descriptors, passphrases, seed and signer locations. You don't want to build something so complicated and poorly documented that even you can't spend some day. Good luck and sorry for your loss if appropriate.
