Libbitcoin is a promising alternative, however, it does seem like different approaches it takes make it a good minority implementation, but not so ideal as a majority implementation.
We definitely need more, and perhaps a complete rebuild from scratch, but that's FAR easier said than done given how many little things can result in chainsplits. Just ask the BTCD team about that...
