Just the messenger here… Patreon CEO posted this today; “I’m Building an Algorithm That Doesn’t Rot Your Brain.” I’m sharing for context, as this brand of rhetoric seems to resonate with many outside of this space. Releasing an Op-ed behind a closed NYT paywall is also telling.
Curious how Nostriches might respond? I’m in the trenches myself. #asknostr https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EO14wPQw89c

I’d argue that it isn’t possible without fully disconnecting the platform from both state influence and shareholder-driven models. Companies already inside that system can’t really escape—they’ve agreed to its rules.
Still, opening the discussion matters. The likely winner? Something new and decentralized, like Nostr.
Thanks for responding to this. Absolutely agree with everything you’ve mentioned. I think it’s worth noting the type of marketing used here too, as with this CEO, so many users just buy into this sort of talk. It’s a shame that a lot of our technical concepts are un-sexy to most, therefore many overlook them. I also found it ironic that this Op-ed from Patreon was behind a NYT paywall, because of course.
I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of these kinds of announcements as the old monopoly realizes it’s losing its grip and starts shifting into damage-control mode. Weird times, for sure — but honestly, pretty exciting ones. It’s not often you get to watch a major historical turning point unfold in real time.
And yeah, the “un-sexiness” of the underlying tech is tied to the fact that people don’t love being reminded that real change requires effort — and that it’s coming whether we’re ready or not.
The divide is probably unavoidable at this stage, but the good news is that no one’s being forced into either camp. It’s an entirely optional fork in the road. And personally, I’m pretty confident we’re on the right side of it.
Well said. Sometimes I have to remind myself to just take a breath and be glad this all exists. Something many of us have dreamt of 20+ years ago. Definitely a historic shift. Ethics aside, It’s also reassuring to be here up and running during an aws/cloudflare outage. We know what’s inevitable to come and will continue waving the flag here with open arms as it does!
