Today was the first time I've ever gone tree hunting alone. Everyone I usually go with is busy this weekend, and I was not waiting until the 13th. That would be crazy. So I loaded up and drove up into the hills. It was just me and the silence of the mountains, on the edge of the back country. I didn't see another person, vehicle, or animal anywhere past the edge of town. I drove up beyond my favorite camping spot, pulled over, and hiked up a glen to where the little trees grow the best. On my way in, I saw a beautiful tree. I trapsed past and continued looking for about 30 minutes. All the others that I saw were underwhelming or crooked. I turned back, thinking I would settle for the first one I had seen. I spotted this tree from a distance and thought, "wow, that's beautiful, too." As I walked up on it, I found my original footprints from looking at it the first time. After I got over my completely private humiliation, I lit up the silence with my battery powered sawzall and loaded it on the roof of my jeep. When I got back into town, I stopped at the general store to grab a coffee and a snack. I came out just in time to catch a group of young girls running up the road, squealing about the cute jeep with the Christmas tree in top. It really is the perfect tree.
