I've been thinking about my life enjoyment lately and a big part of what drags me down is getting into doom scrolling.
For work I need a device that's connected to a lot of stuff, but I want to unplug outside of those times. I think my Graphene phone will be that for me, and the only social I plan on having with it is Nostr.
What other minimal things do you figure would be useful to put on it for basic non-work necessities, that also won't have me habitually looking at a screen all day? Think things like maps, ride sharing, message app for only friends and family, etc

I built boltraven.com to combat this for myself. I donβt doom scroll anymore. I bookmark things I love then enjoy deep diving on them.
I think 2 phones is pretty necessary for people dependent on phones/internet for work.
I just bought a dumb phone (but can't figure it out ironically) for weekends or gym time that would just have a separate phone number for emergencies.
I like the idea of being completely disconnected at least once a week.
But would possibly want a dumbish phone or non work phone with the apps mentioned and maybe a nice camera too.
A good podcast app, my fav is AntennaPod. So you can just listen and not have to watch. For messaging, Signal is easy for most folks to use (family). Also, SimpleX is great. For music, i use Newpipe (youtube frontend). It lets you subscribe and download music without logging in. I use all of these on my graphene phone and love them.
I feel the same way. Internet has been soo unbelievably toxic lately. I feel itβs affects on me, and I donβt like it.
Organic maps, Molly-foss, AntennaPod, Voice (audio books), Amethyst (or Primal)
i use syncthing to exchange folders between my phones
Must be something in the air , feel exactly the same, time to turn off & touch grass (or sand) ππ»

Oh yes, and disable the most notifications. Probably keep these relevant to your family on.
Notesnook for notes to
We are launching soon to reduce doom and promote good nostr things in the meatspace. check out my site. opening in October.

NewPipeβs download feature is good then play downloaded audio via VLC although Iβm not sure having a YouTube front end is helpful if your trying to avoid being on your phone all day so proceed with caution π
Sounds like a plan
One option if you want only one phone, is to set up a separate profile that only includes certain things. Or even a notification scheme on the main profile that only lets one or two people get notifications through.
The family messaging app might get mixed up if it's not synced on your main phone, if people don't know when to message you where. Signal's notification settings and tabs can be handy - you just can't use one number on two phones at once.
But to your question, I'd find something for music or audiobooks. Maybe recipes, if cooking helps you unwind. I like CoMaps lately. Weawow is nice for weather.
I started using gray scales instead of colours (via accessibility menu).
This has a quite strong effect!
Alternatively there are devices with e-ink display like the "Daylight DC-1".
Thanks, I'm going to try this one!
Syncthing is extraordinary! I wouldn't wanna live without it anymore.
Thinking about this more and more.
Nostr as great as it is in terms of a protocol is not a great solution to the doomscrolling problem. You end up doing the same thing on a decentralized protocol instead of doing it on a centralized platform. One is better than the other, but it's important to recognize that content consumption is endless on Nostr too. I can scroll as far back on my TL as I want with no friction. Meaning I have the same destructive behavior.
So my solution would indeed be a phone with no Nostr either. Maybe just a signer to give you access to nostr clients you might use outside of the social media realm. (Podcasting, bookstr, zap cooking....essentially all non social media nostr clients that can be used as tools).
So my ideal setup would be
1. An emergency / tool phone. GrapheneOS would be great there. No Nostr social media clients, but nostr signer like Amber would be good
2. A "social" phone. Call it even a decoy. Graphene might not be required here and could even help selling the decoy concept.
Nostr social clients could be setup on a different profile. And the regular profile would have all of the classic normie apps .
I think both phones would need to be android to achieve this.
Made by a bitcoiner, you can download the maps you use most, it includes mountain trails
nostr:npub1235tem4hfn34edqh8hxfja9amty73998f0eagnuu4zm423s9e8ksdg0ht5 is excellent imo.
My daily driver, as the kids say. I couple that with #IVPN when I'm away I also use nostr:nprofile1qqsxp4fkwhc8mm5704mezrh6g35zmp7t2v338wnxhr6yf8tyj9ezj6cpzpmhxue69uhkumewwd68ytnrwghszgnhwden5te0dehhxarjxqcjucm0w4h8getjvdkx7cmtwa5hxefwd9hj7qgawaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxwet9dd5kzmfwwdjhyanfvdjhxtcarhjl6
I use nostr:npub168euw93e4cam59llcmydav0akwjk2p4nfy3p85pn22xv9y2jxuzq4s9uaw on my nostr:npub1235tem4hfn34edqh8hxfja9amty73998f0eagnuu4zm423s9e8ksdg0ht5 pixel phone.

We just need a rock solid messenger on Nostr, but we will do it.
Been using GOS for many years on multiple phones....
Keep it lean and mean:
- No Play Services
- No Location Services
- Stock keyboard and browser only
- Signal installed by APK, notifications work perfectly, app updates automatically with a notification informing you of this, battery life is just fine
- Use multiple profiles
- Use Obtainium for apps
- SimpleX Chat messages and calls work perfectly
- Set auto reboot for security
- Learn to adapt and change, this ain't your Samsung
OsmAnd for maps, Maple AI progressive web app for AI
While I think it is unhealthy to doom scroll. The world is full of atrocities and ignoring them only aids those committing the atrocities. For those of us privileged enough to just ignore them and do "self care" it is most important that we raise our voices. Just bring apathetic to the suffering in the world is not the answer. There is literally a genocide being perpetrated in 4k and the world is doing nothing to stop it. This is not the time to ignore what is happening in the world just because it makes you uncomfortable.
Why you make nice lady Caitlin into a grotesque monster click bait?
After all the work she has done for the space.
Would you onlyfans your wife for clicks?
Do you not have enough sats, or engagement already?
yeah doomscroll addiction is your karma
sorry not sorry

What do you want to use your phone for? I recomend to treat it as a tool and not an entertainment device. Less is more.
In those cases i use no phone all together. I just keep my apple watch on me so i can contact friends and family, i can use maps to move around and some other apps that are useful day to day. Obviously you need a watch with a eSim. My philosophy is : cannot doom scroll if there is nothing to doom scroll. Ps you need a pair of airpods too, it helps with calls, listening to music or podcast.
You live in Canada⦠pretty hard not to see the doom around you.

This is the reality of how YouTube works. No one sees anything unless you get them in the door. The main content of the show has not changed. I echo your sentiment on silly titles and thumbnails, but no one other than existing bitcoiners click non sensational packaging, and thus there becomes no opportunity to funnel new people to things like the tutorial library.
In short, the packaging of those videos is not meant to entice those that already know what's up. It's meant to funnel fiat normies into a rabbit hole that leads them towards best practices and tools. Every one of those clips features a call to action to visit this page and begin the learning journey of self custody, cold storage, privacy tools, running nodes, etc

When I'm trying to spend time with my kids I want to remove all distractions other than the basic apps I'll need for day to day life. That's what I'm getting at in regards to doom scrolling - just flipping from item to item, being distracted from the life unfolding in front of me.
I think you may have read into this post very differently than it was intended.
I wonder if I can do something similar to this with Android.
like you have to explain the choices you make to be more present in the moment, and present with your family, to us internet randos. your intuition will tell you what is pulling you in directions that weaken you. what the rest of us think about that doesnt matter.
Something to check the weather is helpful
KOReader with some good ePubs.
Circadian app to remind you when to be outside to get your daily light exposure. It tells you when UV-A and UV-B becomes available at your location.
For me notebooks (Field Notes) and MasterClass videos are helpful.
still a lot to do to make it all orange #bitcoin With Nostr it's also a good idea to have a custom follow list. For example I have a list called "Home" that has only something like 13 people that only post deeper thoughtful content that I enjoy - like nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytndv9kxjm3wdahxcqg5waehxw309ahx7um5wfekzarkvyhxuet5qqsw4v882mfjhq9u63j08kzyhqzqxqc8tgf740p4nxnk9jdv02u37ncdhu7e3 ). Amethyst supports custom lists.
A cool little app is Habits - essentially set some goals and have widgets on screen to quickly mark that you did the goal each day.
Another app could be book reader: I enjoy reading books on my phone, so app like Moon+ reader (it has paid version, but I really like it). Not sure if this fits your definition.
Get good music app for offline music and load the phone with a bunch of music you like. I like Shuttle.
Get podcast app if that fits your definition - AntennaPod is now surprisingly good.
And then obviously set up way to pay with bitcoin, so e.g. Phoenix and Coinos web app (for zaps)
Note that I'm also very susceptible to doom-scrolling unfortunately π’
I have limited willpower, especially in the evenings because of being tired and not having enough sleep.
On my desktop the thing I actually do is change my /etc/hosts https://stacker.news/items/29648/r/nout and then on my home wifi I block some DNS servers using pi-hole.
Definitely a VPN app. Can't imagine going without Surfshark VPN these days. Has CleanWeb (ads/trackers/malware blocker), Antivirus, anonymous web search and more included, also allows unlimited devices to be connected and is super cheap compared to others. If you haven't already, you definitely will want to take a look π
https://surfshark.club/friend/kw5Mr7HK
Quite easy.
Graphene + Orbot/InviziblePro/TorVPN/I2P
Then only install open source applications through Obtainium or F-droid for communication.
Everything else is a fragile distraction that will fail sooner rather than later so no sense in trying to make Google, your bank and all those fiat shit ID apps work.
Better to focus on the essentials and get the work done.
Do not worry about those things that do not work through that setup. You don't really need those.
We win by peacfully leaving their dominion.
