The people of Israel wanted a king like the nations around them. Ironically, the lack of a king is what made them special – and better – than the other nations. They were led by the Lord and the nation managed by judges. They would soon learn that centralizing power in a monarchy is not good. They were taxed heavily, and their sons sent to war.
