Nobody should ever have even the possibility of "ruling for life" I don't care how popular they are. That's not healthy for society and I don't care how uncorruptible anyone thinks they are. If we were talking about like a mayor of a city that affects like 250k or fewer people that would be one thing but we're talking about a position overseeing millions that can basically arbitrarily sweep anyone as a criminal and silence dissidence.

He only has, like you say the possibility of ruling for life. Maybe he does a great job for 30 years and then they get rid of him. He still has to be voted in. Also if you got to El Salvador you will understand just how insanely popular Nayib is.
