Other than a few exceptions, PhDs are not engineers. They don't know how to design, they don't know how to prototype, they don't know how to code, they don't know how to debug, they don't know how to work with hardware.
Keep them as away as possible from the actual product. Leave them to their white boards and their Matlab scripts.
