The bare facts are ugly. Situational Awareness sold its public equities portfolio to Ken Griffin’s Citadel after steep losses in AI-linked stocks, a dramatic unwind for a fund that had become a symbol of peak AI confidence. The Financial Times reported the fund plunged 67% in July, while Aschenbrenner told investors he would “fight another day” and learn from “very expensive scars.”

One reading is that Citadel’s intervention was bigger than a single fund. The deal “helped stem a $3tn AI rout,” according to the FT, suggesting the sale reassured traders who were already panicking about whether AI infrastructure bets had become dangerously crowded. In that view, Situational Awareness was less an isolated blowup than the poster child for a market that had confused momentum with inevitability.

Another reading is harsher: this was hubris with a term sheet. Critics zeroed in on the mismatch between Aschenbrenner’s AI celebrity and his limited trading experience, with The Verge mocking the very name of the fund and Business Insider arguing that “the market doesn't care how smart you are.” The subtext is simple enough — being early, or even right, does not protect a leveraged portfolio when the tape turns.

But the bulls are not entirely gone. TechCrunch noted that while the public book was unwound, the fund still holds private assets, including Anthropic shares. That matters because even some skeptical coverage concedes Aschenbrenner’s broader AI thesis — massive spending on chips, compute and power — may still prove directionally correct.

So the real test now is not whether AI remains transformative. It is whether the trade got too far ahead of the thesis, and whether one of its loudest evangelists just proved the difference the hard way.
