It's not to prevent competitors from doing things, it's to make sure they can't prevent *us* from understanding what *our* things are doing > before it made sense for sourcing free labour and collaboration, but copying is so much more powerful now and correspondingly, our ability to control and develop the technology in our lives is much better.
