If you are wondering how much you need to stash to live well, look Up Spain. If you never looked you won't believe how well you can live in a rural part of a first world country. Safe, cheap, and grounded people. Its not perfect. PS I don't work for Spanish tourist board.

It has little in common with either country. It's not Anglo Saxon, so traditionally the priorities are completely different. Economically it is feeling the influences from the North of course, but within reason if you want to escape the rat race It is feasible.
